Locally made hot sauce turns up the heat
Byron Jackson has always liked spicy foods, but he says his affinity for hot sauces sprung from his days as a basketball player on the UWM Panthers. Retreating to "recession worthy" bars and restaurants
These are hard economic times, there's no question of that. We've said goodbye to dozens of local boutiques and businesses and corporate layoffs seem sadly imminent in several sectors of our economy. But going out to eat or out for a drink, there seem to be wait times, full dining rooms and packed bars.

Hotch-a-don't
Our beloved East Side is a truly special, organically-developed gem. The feeling is laid back, the people are tolerant and life seems more meaningful. I loved living there and now love the visit. As a family, we hang out, have fun and eat almost weekly on the East Side. But, sometimes that genuine East Side attitude turns into self-important apathy.

Busy Beans & Barley is always worth the wait
Though business is steady for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the atmosphere at Beans & Barley, 1901 E. North Ave., always quiet and calming. Even the people waiting for tables seem at peace (unlike the frenetic crowds you find in some restaurant waiting lines). Once seated, you'll find a pleasing variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian sandwiches, soups and dishes made with fresh ingredients that will leave you pleasantly stuffed.

Milwaukee's best veggie burger, 2008: Beans & Barley
For as long as we've been tailgating before Brewers games and grabbing late-night eats at George Webb, Milwaukee has been a hamburger kind-of town. While those culinary traditions won't be dissipating any time soon, the local burger landscape has more recently opened its parameters to let its step-cousin, the veggie burger, in on the fun.

Urban Outfitters adds jolt to buzzing 'hood
There is no denying, however, that with iNova Gallery, Urban Outfitters, Esselle and Anytime Fitness in the Kenilworth Building, which used to look like dead space in the heart of the East Side, the neighborhood around OnMilwaukee.com's North Avenue office is as vibrant as ever and perhaps more so than ever.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
