First look: Pane e Vino

Published Nov. 8, 2013

Pane' Vino opened Wednesday inside The Astor Hotel, 924 E. Juneau Ave. The spaghetteria - yes, that's a word and isn't it fun to say? - offers, not surprisingly, almost entirely pasta dishes from tortellini to linguine to spaghetti.

Italian dining guide

Published Oct. 26, 2013

Few ethnic cuisines are better represented in Milwaukee than that of the Italians. We've got nearly everything, from traditional Italian-American red sauce joints to upscale eateries and adventurous menus. There has been an upsurge recently in fine Italian dining in Milwaukee and so it's time to present some highlights of Italian dining in Brew City.

In search of the perfect pizza: Pizza Man

Published Oct. 2, 2013

While I typically share the history of the pizzerias I visit, Pizza Man's story has been told, told again, and then told some more by every media outlet in Milwaukee. So I'll spare you that segment. In fact, I try not to blog about pizzerias who get their fair share of press, but I thought this thin crust pizza was worth blogging about.

In search of the perfect pizza: Wells Brothers

Published Sept. 18, 2013

I often find myself in Racine, but it took overhearing an admiring conversation at a different pizzeria to bring Wells Brothers Pizza to my notice. I stopped into this third-generation, award-winning family business to see what all the fuss was about.

In search of the perfect pizza: Bennolli's

Published Sept. 11, 2013

Picture "Main Street in Small Town, USA" like you see in some of the movies. Now modernize it with newer buildings, more cars and an Art Walk event like the one taking place on the afternoon of my visit. That's Delafield. This is where Tom Halverson opened Bennolli's Pizza seven years ago, a small pizzeria that strives to use the freshest ingredients.

In search of the perfect pizza: Toscana

Published Aug. 14, 2013

The Entertainment Book introduced me to Toscana Italian Ristorante, located at 8405 S. 27th St. in Franklin. Chef and owner, Eddie Sopiqoti moved here from Albania after working for 10 years in the Tuscany (hence Toscana) region of Italy, learning the craft of Italian cuisine, including pizza.

In search of the perfect pizza: Saraphino's

Published Aug. 7, 2013

I was anxious to check out Saraphino's on Layton Avenue. The owner, Rushan Sinani, is an Albanian immigrant, and his pizzas are made with family recipes.

In search of the perfect pizza: Chuck's Place

Published May 29, 2013

I would have never known of the existence of Chuck's Place Restaurant, 406 N. Main St. in Thiensville, were it not for social media. One of my Yelp friends checked in at Chuck's Place using the mobile app, and the comments exchanged between a few Yelpers intrigued me.

In search of the perfect pizza: Bobbana's Pizza

Published May 1, 2013

Five years ago, Manual Castellanos, Jr. was looking for a new opportunity after working as an auto worker at a GM plant. He found Bobanna's for sale so he and his family made the purchase. I decided to stop in and check out the Hawaiian pizza and Meat Lovers pizza.

In search of the perfect pizza: Ferrante's

Published April 17, 2013

In 1938, newlyweds Rosalie and Alex Ferrante established the first Ferrante's Restaurant in central Milwaukee. A friend and I decided to check out the popular restaurant opened by their kids in Mequon, and we were pleasantly surprised by a Texas Ranch Pizza.

In search of the perfect pizza: Papa Luigi's

Published April 10, 2013

I stopped in to the Cudahy location of Papa Luigi's Pizza, owned by Salvatore Purpora and his family. Customer service is a priority here, and I wanted to check out Papa Luigi's mysterious secret blend of spices.
