When Orville Pitts was elected Milwaukee alderman in 1968, his political future looked as bright as the one that had seemed in store for Pitts in the boxing ring a decade earlier. But unlike the knockout that ended his boxing career, his downfall in the political arena was self-inflicted and a drawn-out process featuring, in random order, booze, drugs, hookers, the devil and Richard M. Nixon. Pitts died Tuesday at 81, after a long illness.

TMZ is reporting that actor Windell Middlebrooks died today. The actor was most famous for his recurring ad campaign role as the Miller High Life Guy, a straight-talking delivery man who preached the values of the true "high life" and would revoke the beer in situations deemed unworthy.

The Third Ward awoke to some sad news this morning. According to an email sent out by Nancy O'Keefe, executive director of the Historic Third Ward Association, Bella Caffe co-owner Tim Talsky passed away Thursday night.

A couple friends have notified me in recent days of the passing of two veteran Milwaukee musicians. In November and December, rocker Roland Stone and jazzman Sammy Armato passed away.

Brooklyn punks Obits come to Milwaukee on Oct. 6 to play the Cactus Club as part of a lengthy tour in support of the quartet's third Sub Pop Records disc, "Beds & Bugs." We were so smitten that we cornered guitarist Sohrab Habibion and asked him about the record, about the tour and, of course, about baseball.
