Gig roundup: Trying to define Glasvegas
Now that I'm completely addicted to Glaswegian band Glasvegas' self-titled debut LP, I've been trying to come up with the perfect comparison for its blustery, melodic wall-of-sound Brit-pop. That bit of irrelevance aside, Glasvegas is touring the U.S. opening for Kings of Leon and plays at the Bradley Center on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Gig roundup: Steez brings home the creepfunk
Madison quintet Steez has blazed trails of funk across the Midwest, picking up a devoted fan base along the way and also nabbing titles at the 2008 and 2009 Summer Camp Festivals, the Rothbury Festival, and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. Now it comes to Milwaukee to celebrate its studio debut, "Creepfunk Crusade."

Gig roundup: Williams tries something a bit different
You think you know Dar Williams and her music already, don't you? But, wait. Stop the presses! Williams' latest record on Razor & Tie, "The Promised Land," was produced by Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Ben Lee, Pete Yorn) and isn't entirely what you expect.

Gig roundup: Polkafinger plays the apolkalypse
You don't have to remember Milwaukee's legendary punk band The Haskels to head over to Shank Hall to see Polkafinger and The Blackholes Power Polka Machine, at 9 p.m. Friday. Although Polkafinger's Richard LaValliere was the singer and bassist for The Haskells and later the equally fine Oil Tasters, you don't need any of that background to enjoy the Brooklyn trio's punk rock polka.

Gig roundup: I'm Not a Pilot takes off with fine EP
I'm Not a Pilot officially releases its debut EP with a Miramar Theater gig on Friday, June 5. The disc -- handsomely packaged and sonically sound -- features five melodic bursts that are notable (especially among local music) for its lack of guitars. Instead, these at times epic, at times tender, songs are constructed around frontman Mark Glatzel's piano and voice and Peter Thomas' cello work.

What's the best part about Thanksgiving in Milwaukee?
The Packers play on a Thursday.
Gluttonous eating without consequence.
The weather should be nice enough on "Black Friday" to shop Bayshore or Third Ward.
One or two days off of work.
Giving thanks, with friends and family.
Christmas is only a month away, and Hanukkah is even closer.
Bah humbug.
