There's no better time than the present - "a terrible time for music, if you listen to the Top Ten," according to John Sieger - to bring gospel, the roots of almost all popular music genres, to center stage. That's exactly what Sieger and company plan to do this Friday night with Milwaukee Gospel: Jubilee at the Pabst Theater.

The burgeoning Milwaukee music scene is waiting to explode out of the Third Coast. The fuse has already been partially lit by the MilwaukeeHome stage team, who are in the midst of bringing some of the city's music down to South By Southwest down in Austin. Another fuse, however, is being lit right here in town by IndieMKE2, a compilation album featuring 20 songs from 20 locally based bands.

When most of us are flipping through local radio stations, we're merely hoping to find a good station with a good run of catchy songs to help make the ride through traffic a bit more tolerable. When Sean Behling was flipping through stations back in 2005 when he moved to Milwaukee, he happened to find the inspiration for a whole album. The result was "Unwound," the recently released 43-track album of IDM and big band-infused instrumental hip-hop from Flight Mechanics, the duo of Behling (Seakn) and Paul Duquesnoy (Boost).
