The food is solid, but service languid at Centraal
Café Centraal, 2306 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., the Diablos Rojos restaurant group's fourth and newest venue, has been open just shy of a month and a half now, and the restaurant's popularity seems to continue to grow as the days pass. The food here is already solid and consistent.

Beer in food: What a brilliant idea
Have you heard that beer's not just for swigging from a bottle anymore? Instead, more and more restaurants like Cafe Centraal, Hinterland Gastropub and Stonefly Brewery offer dishes that include the hoppy ingredient.
"All of our desserts made with beer are very, very popular," says Hinterland's Lindsey Weigel.

A piping hot surprise of a pretzel
Because I only usually eat pretzels at the zoo and the ballpark, my standards have fallen since I grew up eating delicious examples on the streets of New York. Unlike here in Milwaukee where the pretzel is most often wedded to (natch!) cheese, in the Big Apple, mustard is the bride of choice.

Cafe Centaal is very spacious and inviting. Their staff is pleasant (and can take and dish out some razzing). The lighting is mellow and non-abrasive. And although the smoking section is just across the room, you cannot see nor smell the smoke from the non-smoking section.I personally...
