Watson lets British Open slip through his fingers
Stewart Cink is a gentleman and a terrific golfer, but his victory in the 138th British Open will be remembered as the one that Tom Watson let slip away. Watson, 59, played terrific golf for 71 holes and was on the brink of authoring the sports story of the year when before faltering and losing a four-hole playoff to Cink Sunday at Turnberry in Scotland.

Hot putter puts Watson within reach of a miracle
During the third round of the 138th British Open, Tom Watson consistently snaked in 20-, 30- and 40-foot putts, seemingly at will. That's put him in contention for what would be an improbable and historic victory.

British co-leader Watson still getting his kicks at 59
Fifty-nine is one of the magic numbers in the game of golf. In fact, it may be the most magical of all numbers associated with this great game and on Friday, in the second round of the 138th British Open at Turnberry, Tom Watson introduced the magic number of 59 to major championship golf. Watson, who owns five Claret Jugs, posted a second round score of even-par 70 to share the halfway lead with American Steve Marino atop the leader board of the 2009 British Open at 5-under par.

Tom Watson is winning the British Open? For several glorious hours, it was true. Old Tom Watson, a golfing legend of almost 60 years young, was alone atop the leader board of golf's oldest major championship. He played a youthful round at five-under par 65 on a glorious day for golf in the kingdom.

Some new international sporting rules; thanks LPGA
Since the LPGA is an American organization, I won't argue its language policy. However, I will suggest that it work both ways.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
