It began as any Sunday morning might. Two new friends met for brunch only to discover they share an affinity for a well-crafted Bloody Mary. As one Sunday flowed into the next, an idea was born. The Bloody Brunch was born.

In much of the country, the Bloody Mary is a lightly regarded brunch concoction. In Wisconsin, it has a deeper, almost religious significance. Cheeseheads love the combination of vodka, tomato juice and spices and they love having it served with a small glass of beer. In fact, they're offended if they don't get one. Have you ever stopped to wonder when, how and why the tradition started? We did.

One the most beautiful aspects of this drink is its versatility. There are virtually hundreds of ways to mix a Bloody and each bar and restaurant seems to do it differently.

A drink a day: Michelada
I tried my first Michelada in Merida, Mexico, a city of almost 1 million people on the Yucatan Peninsula -- and one that I'd never heard of until my awesome visit there in 2002. Think of it as a Mexican Bloody Mary. Spicy, salty and strangely refreshing, I'm still waiting for it to make its way to Wisconsin.
