Missing My Dear Friend...

I remember the first time I met Hillary, in my First Year Seminar class the first semester of my freshman year of college at Gallaudet University. She was probably one of the most loudest outspoken loudmouth people I have ever met. She would go on and on about how things were where's she's from in Kentucky or in Russia, since she had just finished being an exchange student there. She totally and completely got on my nerves.

I'll never forget one evening in the dining hall how she joined me and Toby, a dear friend and we were discussing food. All of a sudden she reached over and grabbed my hand and gave it a huge slap on the back of it while I had my fork trying to eat my food. She said that's what her mamma does when she doesn't eat her veggies. As I got up and left the table after that display, I decided at that moment, that this woman is stranger than strange, and that I would not want to hang around her anymore, outside of class.

That spring... we were in 3 classes together, and she was even more annoying in Personal Discovery class. However in that class, we had a mutual friend, Mel from California. Mel decided that spring that she was fed up with our bickering and gossiping about each other and she had a new mission, to make us realize how exactly alike we were, growing up with parents that didn't know Sign Language while we did, how much we both loved to travel, and that we both thought Clinton was an amazing President, and we were both the biggest slobs she ever met.

Before I knew it, I realized that she wasn't as bad or as evil as I thought she was that fateful night. In fact... it was me who took the plunge and asked her if she wanted to be roommates our sophomore year. Honestly that year was one of the funniest I had in college! We had great fun hanging out together, enjoying each other's company. One of the best things I loved about being in a deaf university came out that year where I could have the TV on mute with closed captions, with music blaring, and I could be switching back and forth between TV and working on a paper, and my roommate wouldn't wake up, and none of the neighbors could hear me either, or would call the cops or security on me for being too loud. Bliss I tell ya... bliss! We also became sorority sisters, that year, totally solidifying our friendship.

However all good things must come to an end, and that spring.. I wasn't doing that good, and for many personal reasons I left Gallaudet after my sophomore year there. Hillary was sad, but she had another friend who was going to be her new roommate, and we did keep in touch the 3 years I was back in Milwaukee. After transferring to UWM, and spending a good year and a half there, I realized I missed Gallaudet too much, smaller classes, actually knowing my professors, so I decided to transfer back.

Yet again, and amazing decision on my part, and me and Hillary were roommates once again. The first thing we did that semester, was travel to the boonies of Kentucky where her mom was getting hitched for the second time, and by going there I understood my friend a lot better after seeing where she came from, in a town not even on a map, for Mapquest was useless going to a tiny mountain town of just 45 or so families. I had a great weekend that weekend. When we got back, since we were now older, we always went out on Wednesday nights, to this bar called Pourhouse on Penn Ave, (now everyone goes to another bar Argo last I checked) since wednesday nights everyone meets up at a bar, and the bar declares it to be Deaf Night and has drink When we got back, since we were now older, we always went out on Wednesday nights, to this bar called Pourhouse on Penn Ave, (now everyone goes to another bar Argo last I checked) since Wednesday nights everyone meets up, and the bar declares it to be Deaf Night and has drink speicals for deaf patrons!

That spring, she graduated with a degree in Government, and moved back home, and took her graduate classes thru Gallaudet online. She did come back for a bit before going to Cameroon to help set up a school for the Deaf, but when she got back I had already graduated and left for Milwaukee… so we haven't been able to re-connect since. She is now living and working in Washington D.C. and I miss her terribly.

So I ask you OnMilwaukee.com please send me to D.C. to see my dear friend. I promise to blog about our crazy weekend, where it is pretty much guaranteed to be a fun time, and a fun read!

D.C.s Underground Culture

A lot of people go to DC to see the regular tourist stuff like I did in 8th grade like the Smithsonian, Vietnam Memorial, Holocaust Museum, and Arlington National Cemetery.

However there is one blip that a lot of people miss or don’t know about D.C., that is this city is considered to be the center of deaf culture in the United States due to the proximity of a little University called Gallaudet, located in the Northeast corner just a few blocks behind Union Station.

Gallaudet is the world’s only four year liberal arts university for the deaf and hard of hearing, established in 1856, when Abraham Lincoln signed the school charter. (Ever since, the sitting president has signed the diplomas) It is known around the world in deaf circles, as the school to go to for inclusive college education, since all classes are taught in American Sign Language. Hearing people can attend the school, as graduate students, but as an undergraduate, a prospective student would have to show competence in American Sign Language before admittance, and are limited to majoring in Interpreting or Deaf Studies.

It has also been the center of controversy with the 1988 “Deaf President Now” protest, which lead the spark that helped get the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) get passed in congress, leading to many major reforms in the workplace and schools across the country.

It may seem like a small and insignificant little school, but its bell tower used to be the center piece of the town, waking up congress, letting them know it was time to head to their morning sessions. After Martin Luther King Jr. was shot, there were riots not that far from Gallaudet along H Street, where many wealthy shops and people lived, sought refuge on campus. Since then, the area has become downtrodden; however there has been signs of that area coming back, due to the affluent moving away from Georgetown, are now realizing that area is becoming a good place to flip a house or two.

I personally would love to go visit DC, and Gallaudet, I have many friends in the area whom attended, and have kept me abreast of different events that has happened, such as the protest against ex-president elect Jane Fernandez (it began due to her amazingly bad leadership skills toward the staff and the students, the whole “she’s not deaf enough” is something she herself created) and the undefeated football team back in 2005 with the tearing down of the goal posts.

I would blog about the accessibility of different museums that DC has, and attend the biggest event they have every month, Deaf Professional Happy Hour, (DPHH) which takes place the first Friday on the month at a different venue each month, where on average 150 to 300 deaf people attend, that I would love to bring back to Milwaukee, and I need to meet the people that started it out there in DC, to find out how they did it.

I would also love to go and catch up with a few close friends that have left Milwaukee for the more deaf friendly DC, and hear about their travels, for one of my best friends, I have not seen her since she got back from Cameroon where she was over there helping to set up a school for the deaf.

I would love to go to DC just for a lovely long weekend, to see this great city once more, and to show onmilwaukee.com readers the great amazing underground deaf culture that lurks there!

You can still find a deal on Craigslist...

I love Craigslist. Ever since I found out about it from a guest at the hotel I worked at downtown, long before the Milwaukee list was even started back in 2003. I believe the San Fransisco page started first, before the expanision to NYC, DC and LA.

I was moving back east to DC, and when this guy told me about it, I really had no clue.. so on my break I checked it out and I was amazed at all the stuff listed on there, and how you can post stuff on there for free.

In DC, I used it to find an apartment with an amazing roommate, bought a sofa, sold my bed when I was moving back since I needed to unload some stuff.

I did notice that they added a Milwaukee board back in 2005, and when I was moving back in 2006, it was in full swing, and allowed me to find the most amazing little nook in Bayview. To this day I love using my blackberry to troll the rants and raves, when I am bored out of my mind, when I am out and about and need some form of entertainment.

So last November, the bed my man and I were sleeping on, got moldy and had to go. I wasn't gonna buy a new bed until after we went to Florida, since I would rather save money for that trip. So thus began the Saga of the Air Mattresses.

So, Christmas came and went, New Years as well and finally Florida was an amazing escape in Feb, and we had gone through 3 Air matresses at this point.

So then after saving up a little bit of money, I saw a free queen size bed on Craigslist this past Saturday, thinking I could use the money I had saved on a nice frame. I emailed the owner, and my man called my friend with a van to see if he was free, and to be on standby. Then I refreshed the page and saw the bed was gone. Oh well, then I texted the van guy to let him know... no bed.

Then I switched over and scrolled down the regular furnature page... and I saw the best ad ever. $200 for a California King Size bed, down in South Milwaukee. The owner added pictures to show it was not stained, nor no rips, only 4 years old (it had been in storage for 2 as we later learned) and had left a phone number. It had been posted for about 20 minutes, and I knew I could not let this deal pass me by. I was shaking as I called the number using my VP, and found out it was still there.. and I got the address, and told my man what we where getting, as he was as floored as I was. He called the guy with the van.. and before I knew it we were on our way!

I fell in love with this bed.. the biggest bed I have ever owned, and it actually fits into our bedroom.. (with my nightstand turned sideways) and I am finally happy to have a good night's sleep without worrying that the mattress will explode.

So you can still get a good deal on Craigslist, after dealing with all the insane people who ask an amazing amount of money (IMHO, 2k for a used bed? yeah right!) for stuff that is not worth that price.

Drive By Truckers Postponed their show!

I am so happy! The keyboardist in the band, Drive By Truckers got walking pnumonia, so they canceled a few shows, and will reschedule their show here in Milwaukee! I know I never should feel bad for another person's misery but my reasoning is this...

Last year my man made our plans for Florida that always revolve around his birthday. I was poor, since I had no job, so he paid for the trip, by working a ton of overtime. A week after he booked the trip, it was announced that the Drive By Truckers were coming to town when we were away. He was not a happy camper, but we did have an amazing trip in the 80s and constant sunshine.

This summer, Drive By Truckers did do Summerfest, however my man working 2nd shift, and had used the rest of his time off this year going to brewers games, yet again, we couldn't go.

This year, I booked the trip to Florida approximately the day before it was announced that the Drive by Truckers were coming, it seemed that fate was laughing at us for poor planning, even thought I got amazingly cheap airline tickets for the both of us.

So, after reading on their website that the show was postposted, I texted my man, about what was going on now.. and I eagarly await a new date, so I can use my videophone to call and request an interperter, since my man works first shift now, we can GO! Finally I can see what the fuss is about!

Finally Some Openings!

I just thought after dealing with all those closings of what businesses are closing, how about new things that are opening? I have actually spotted a few!

I was in Mayfair Mall last night just taking care of some things I needed for my vacation coming up soon, and I noticed that Swarvoski is opening up a location there. Reminded me of tour I took of their factory in Germany a few years back, such pretty gems! I am looking forward to seeing what they have to offer at this location.

Now, I am sick of seeing those Sonic ads on TV, knowing that there isn't any Sonic in the Milwaukee area that I am aware of. Then the other night as I was picking up dinner at Rocky's by Miller Park, I noticed that they were actually building a location here in town, and that they were hiring! I am excited to see what kind of food they have since I have never really had food at a drive-in before.

After Andy's blog about Topper's Pizza, I realized I have never eaten there at all and today.. lo and behold next to the Culivers near HWY 100 and Greenfield, I noticed that a new location is going in, and they had signs up stating that the first 50 customers will get free food for a year! Wow, I am doubtful I will be one of those 50, but its a good gimick!

Finally, I have to state.. HURRY UP DAVE AND BUSTERS! I am really excited to see what games they will have! I loved the White Flint Mall location in MD, and its about time they came to Milwaukee!

Need help finding a nice warm cozy spot!

Last night I was racking my brain trying to think of a place here in Milwaukee that resembled this place that I loved in DC called Tryst. I need help trying to find something similar here.

Tryst was a bar/coffeehouse, where they had both sofas/big chairs to lounge on, with coffee tables in the middle. They also had regular tables too that could seat as few as two and as large as 8, and a decent bar for people to sit at too. Wait staff was very attentive, if you where lounging in the sofa for hours reading a book/surfing the web, you could get just a simple coffee/beer/muffin all the way up to an amazing 3 course meal.

Is there anything like that here in Milwaukee that I have not yet discovered?

2008 Picks

This year was a crappy one for me.. bad beginning, but now things are looking up..

MOVIE:There are tons I have not yet seen.. due to the lack of captioning in theatres here in Milwaukee, (just 2 theaters!!) but for what is out on DVD, I would say my favorite is either Ironman or the Dark Knight. I have yet to discover a good drama, I can't wait for Doubt and Slumdog Millionare to hit DVD well after the Oscars are over.

MUSIC:I seriously cannot answer this question, other than the fact that my favorite band, Counting Crows put out a new album, the only one I bought this year, since I have learned to understand Adam's voice over the years.. some singers are difficult to understand!

CONCERT: Yet again, Counting Crows/Maroon 5 at the Marcus, was the only show I went to. I had two of my favorite interps there for the alternate lyrics Adam loves to belt out.. and just listening/watching to him create spine ticking version of Round Here made the exorbant ticket price worth it. He does that at every show, for their older songs, (Rain King, Round Here, Murder of One, and Sullivan Street) creating a new version at every concert. Oh and I didn't watch Maroon 5 at all.

EVENT: Obama getting elected. I will never forget the roar when he won Ohio, at Club Garibaldi's, and it was my best friend's birthday too!! I didn't want to go into work the next day.

TV: I have an odd taste in shows. I hate moral dramas like 7th Heaven, and sitcoms bore me to death now. There are only 6 shows I like to watch and 2 are on preimum channels I don't have. My current top 4 that I can get are.. The Closer, Heroes, Family Guy, and No Reservations (way to lay on the snark Tony!), and the other two I can't wait till they hit DVD are, Weeds and Big Love. Other than those, I really don't watch TV.

That kinda sums up a bit of 2008 for me. I am sooo looking forward to 2009 right now, I can't wait to move, go on vacation and buy a puppy! That's all I really have planned.

A Scooter Story

So, I won that scooter in the blogging contest a few weeks ago. I don't have kids, however I have some friends that do have kids, however none of my friends have kids that are 7ish yet. So I asked around at work if anyone needed a scooter right after I won it, and they were like, "nah".

So I hung on to it, just trying to figure out what to do with it, and I was talking to one friend mine right before thanksgiving and she was telling me how they don't have much money to get toys for their daughter, who is still just a baby.

Then just this past Tuesday one of my co-workers came in and said, "Do you still have the scooter? My husband backed over my daughter's by accident this morning. I'll buy you lunch or something in exchange." I got to thinking.. and I said to her, "Do you have any baby toys?" Turns out she had tons, since she hates having rummage sales.

So, yesterday I brought the scooter into work, and in exchange got a leapfrog toy, as well as this Playskool Noah's Ark. When I brought over the toys to my friend's she was happy to have them, since their daughter is growing out of her baby toys.

It felt good to play santa's elf..

HOV Lane: The Real Blog Entry

I am sorry about the last blog entry... that had the same title as this.. I kept getting an error message when trying to submit it. Oh well.. this is what I was saying..

Last week, I was trying to get on the freeway at 45 heading north from Bluemound/Wisconsin Ave. There are 3 lanes there.. 2 for just the driver and one that says.. HOV- High Occupancy Vehicle, Buses, Motorcycles and Cars with 2 or more passengers. That means if you have a passenger in the car with you, you can use the lane. When the entrance is not metered, the whole HOV lane is pointless, but when it is, people annoy me, especially as I looked around me, I saw 3 cars in front of me with 2 more more passengers.

Why oh why did they not move into the HOV lane? Can they not read the sign? There are on average 10 cars awaiting to get on the freeway when the ramp is metered in the lanes for just the driver, but with that lane you could just zip right on the freeway! I could get on the freeway faster if they just moved over, and everyone is happy.

I was not happy, as I zipped up 45 and got off at Silver Spring to pick up my man. He drove us home, and as we were getting on at 45 heading south, we zipped over to the HOV lane there, and as we very quickly got on the freeway I counted 5 cars that had 2 or more people in it on the lanes for just the driver.

Does anyone know how to use the HOV lanes to get on the freeway here in Milwaukee?

I want my captioning!!!

Last night... I settled down to watch Heroes on channel 4. As the show began, I noticed that they were still showing the closings, and by showing that, they were blocking the captioning!!! I was not happy. I could just let it pass, and watch it today online, with subtitles, however after booting my man out of the house, (He hates the show eh?) I just wanted to relax and watch. So I pulled out my trusty blackberry, and did some googling, and found the number for the station, and then switched the tv to my trusty Sorenson VP. I got an interp pretty quick, and after several calls landing in voicemails, I finally got a person and told them that the school closing where blocking the captioning. Apparently someone there had FORGOTTEN to turn them off.

After the next commerical break... lo the closings where gone, and the captioning was working!! Woot!!! I did a small happy dance as I settled in for the rest of the night. I love my captioning!

Help out a deaf family...

I used to love "Extreme Home Makeover." Then it got beyond cheesy for me, crying every week, however one story really hit home for me. The story of the Vardons.

The Vardons are a deaf couple Larry and Judy, who fell in love and got married. They had 2 boys, an older boy named Stefan who is hearing and a blind autistic son named Lance. Stefan is the biggest bridge between his parents and Lance, and they are true lifelong buddies.

They were able to get on Extreme Home Makeover due to communication issues. How would a mother who depended on her vision to communicate, due to being deaf since birth, be able to communicate with her blind son who depended on sound?

I remember the team got to work, and figured out a computer thing where Judy would type what she wanted Lance to know in a computer, and it would print out into Braille for Lance to read. Cool eh? They also made a huge play room for Lance, since he is autistic, allowing him some freedom. They also installed security cameras since Lance liked to wander off......

Well right now their home is up for foreclosure. The Extreme Home Makeover team didn't pay off their mortgage like they do for many people who are on the show now, and after the show was over the tax assessment on their property tax jumped big time. Also, Larry who worked for Chrysler just got the boot not that long ago, and trying to deal with the medical bills for Lance as well, and by taking out a second mortgage made everything just too much to bear.

Random Acts of Kindness...

This morning I got in a huge row with my man. I just go so mad at him over something so tiny and petty as I dropped him off at work. So, on my way in, I turned on the radio to listen to some christmas music to cheer myself up. I was feeling a bit better as I pulled into the gas station near work to fill up, since one of my favorite tunes was playing.

So I filled up quickly and got back into the car to continue listening. As I drove off.. I looked back and I realized I was hurrying so much I forgot to put the gas cap back in!

Luckily I wasn't that far away.. did a U-Turn and headed back to the station.. and as I pulled in a kind stranger said to me that my cap was in the cross walk, and pointed toward it. I quickly parked my car and thanked the stranger and bid him a Merry Christmas!

If it wasn't for that kind person.. I would have looked around the gas station, but probally not the streets! Now I am in the mood to do something nice for someone else....

Helping out others at Christmas time...

I belong to a special club. You probably are unaware of us, we are part of the underground here in Milwaukee, since the early 1900s. We give food and gifts to people who really need it, getting names from social workers and top social organizations.

Every year we have 3 events, the first event we organize all the food. The second event we wrap presents for kids, each child gets 2 brand new outfits, and if they are under 12 a toy. Kids older than 12 get gift certificates, to top name brand stores and of course the clothes. The third party, we get into teams and deliver this christmas cheer every year just prior to christmas all over the city. Annually we do 500 or so families and seniors. This group is so underground.. we prefer is this way.. to remain quietly giving good cheer to those who need it.

I have been involved since I was 6, wrapping presents and organizing the food, each year until I was old enough to attend the giving party. Personally, it gets me into the christmas mood so much that I am bouncing off the walls until Christmas is over. It is a delight to see the faces of those who need it, crying, and being so thankful that they will have enough food to feed their family a proper christmas dinner, and to have presents under their tree for their children.

I love giving back, and this is my favorite club to be involved in, and I enourgage everyone to give something back this holiday season.

Deaf in a Hearing Family

I am the only Deaf person in my family. The rest of my family is totally and completely hearing.

There are many different labels that persons suffering from hearing loss have, to being Deaf cultured, late deafened, oral deaf, hard of hearing, and the negative terms you should never refer to a person with hearing loss as; hearing impaired, deaf-mute, and finally deaf and dumb.

I am an oral deaf. This means I can speak clearly and read lips so well that you have no clue that I cannot hear you very well in one on one conversation in a quiet environment.

Communicating with others to get your point across may seem effortless to hearing people, but for deaf people it’s an everyday challenge and barrier that leaves you exhausted trying to understand what is going on around you.

Now growing up in a family where no one knows sign language was a challenge. It’s hard sometimes to keep up with dinner table conversations, and to make a comment when you think you know what is discussed. More than often you get laughed at for making a comment that you thought was an important point, but it turns out they were discussing was completely different than what you commented about, and then no one informs you of what the topic was to begin with or why what you said was funny. When you do ask, you are just brushed off with “I will tell you later” and you never find out. Frustrating eh?

I was lucky to be blessed with parents that allowed me to learn sign language, and permitted me to be mainstreamed in our local district rather than going to Wisconsin School for the Deaf. They also sent me off every summer to Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI where I met up with kids from all over the state who were in the same boat as me, growing up oral with hearing parents. We compared families and more often than not, we discovered how similar our experiences were at home.

Even the communication barrier exists today as an adult. I cannot understand my brother anymore, since he became a New Yorker, so we just text each other, and email has been a blessing when get-togethers are discussed. Family gatherings now require the use of a sign language interpreter, if there is one that is available and only used for weddings or memorial services, since there is so much going on, and so much to keep track of.

Nothing is better than being able to communicate freely with your family, and to be able to be understood.

Going to See a movie in the Theatre in Milwaukee if you are Deaf/HoH

I hate going to movies here in Milwaukee. The selection sucks.. SUCKS! Honestly, there are only 2 theatres in town that have captions. Just TWO! Here are your options...

1.) The Ridge- (www.marcustheatres.com) This theatre shows movies that are Open Captioned (OC). This means that the captions are burned onto the screen and you can easily read and see the whole movie at once. Deaf people love this, but the showtimes are terrible, one movie shown three times during the course of a weekend; Friday mid-afternoon, Saturday early morning, and Sunday late at night. That's it. If you miss it, sorry bubba, you have to wait till it comes out on DVD. Also the only movies that get this treatment are the big blockbusters, and family movies. Anything else forget it, no art house stuff or films up for academy awards. This is the only theatre in town that shows them, this sooo sucks.

2.) Mayfair AMC- (www.bigscreen.com) This theater is a better option than the Ridge.. shows films Rear Window Captioned (RWC). RWC is a ton more complicated to expain than OC. What RWC basically is, the words are scrolled/flashed backwards on the back wall of the theater, and you have to ask at the guest services for the plastic black mirror that you put into the cup holder. It takes forever to adjust it to read the words on the back wall, to a point where you can read what is happening and watch the screen at the same time. Lots of pratice and arriving early to get everything adjusted is highly recommeded. However since only you can read what is being captioned, and other viewers are not distracted by the captions, they show the movie on average 4 times a day for an entire week, so you have plenty of time to catch the film. However if the captioner on the back wall is broken, its down for at least two weeks, since the nearest guy who can fix it has to drive all the way up from Chicago, which may mean you miss out on a few good films. However the selection is a bit better, I have seen scary movies and even some smaller movies get captioned, however due to just ONE theatre utilizing this great invention, you are stuck with just that movie for the week. In Washington DC, (Deaf capital of the US) there are at least 10 theatres who have this, with various movies playing.. which gives you a better spread of films to see. I really wish there were more options here in Milwaukee for this technology.

Then there is foreign films. I miss MIFF big time. Honestly to go see a foregin film with a bunch of hearing friends is so much fun since you can understand what is happening on the screen. The problem here in Milwaukee is not too many foreign films are shown here since the MIFF went bankrupt. The last movie I managed to catch was Pan's Labrynth, such a great film! I recall volunteering for the MIFF as a Theatre Manager on the last night of it back in 2006, and telling everyone to go watch the movie, Wristcutters, explaining I couldn't because its in English! (I managed to catch it just this past summer on DVD) I wish there was a listing for foregin film when they come into town, rather than depending on word of mouth when there is one.
