I thought bars did well in a bad economy?

I've been bartending since I was 18, for 9 years now. Since I graduated from college, I only bartend once a week in addition to my "day" job. I love the extra money and it is a great way to socialize and meet cool people. Lately though it seems like things have slowed down. It is understandable... with the weather and everyone watching their spending.

So I'm looking for some advice on how to build up my happy hour. I've worked at a bunch of places around town, but I currently work at the Up and Under on Fridays from 5-9. You can only harass your friends so much so I'm looking for a special or promotion that would get new people in the door. Live music doesn't start until 10, so I normally play my own music. I love doing a few hours of "oldies" because it appeals to all ages and people seem to really enjoy it. We do not serve food. Other than that we have a $3 pint special (currently a weiss) and $2 shots of Southern Comfort (random I know)

The owners are open to changing the special, but everything has to go through them. Unfortunately, I can tell you right now that they will not approve free beer/booze specials.
