Now, admittedly, I would take a bullet for the Brewers. Every bit of my spine tingles when I hear the old Brewers jingle on the radio, "keep turnin' up the heat," and I wear my retro Brewers cap with pride around town.

...and, I'm part of the problem.

What fan base in Major League Baseball (or sports) for that matter rallies around a 25th anniversary for being the runner-up in the world series?Do the Buffalo Bills have a 5 disc DVD set of failed Super Bowl attempts, much like our "Harvey's Wallbangers" DVD?Would the fans of the title-hungry, Phoenix Suns run out tomorrow and grab bobbleheads commemorating this season's crushing loss handed to them by the Spurs?

Is this making sense to anyone here in Milwaukee?

I am constantly perplexed by the fanaticism surrounding the Milwaukee Brewers in this city. I have never seen a more popular team at the turnstiles that underperformed, lied to fans, had a weak and conservative MLB payroll, and failed to qualify for the playoffs for 25 years? Are we baseball fans here, or just fans of drinking in a parking lot in the warm weather? What do want to be known as? The mythical, "Great Wisconsin sports fan" may be just that. A myth.

A great WI sports fan would not only buy bobbleheads and retro caps, but would also pay attention to the herculean effort and big market spending being done by a mild mannered Senator on 4th street. The truth of the matter, is that the WI sports fan ignores the "Big League" approach of the Milwaukee Bucks and favors the anemic, small-time goodwill of racing sausages and nolstagia. How can attendance have dropped at Bucks games and there is no outcry to support our NBA team here with a much needed new building, when just 6 short years ago the Bucks were a shot away from the NBA finals? How can there be apathy with the Bucks, when they have consistently spent New York and LA sized dollars while the Brewers are still 20 million behind our competition in payroll? How is it, with the youngest roster in the NBA and massive rebuilding, the Bucks have qualified for the playoffs in 2 of the last 4 years? This after mounting an Eastern Conference run that featured the league's 5th highest payroll, and the highest paid coach in all of sports?

Mind-numbingly, I know the Bucks must win big to garner any of the attention locally in our fair-weather sports consciousness in Milwaukee, but we need to step back and appreciate Milwaukee's true "Big leagues" in the Milwaukee Bucks.

The sad truth may be that short of winning an NBA title, the Bucks may never draw in Milwaukee. We'll be too busy posing for pictures with a man in a Chorizo suit, while Michael Redd scores 60 in a game, and Larry Harris goes out and signs multiple players away with big league money to really try to bring an NBA title to Milwaukee.

All the while we'll remark that, "well they signed Suppan." And, we'll continue to look backwards and get fired up over the same Robin Yount footage where he tears around the warning track on a motorcycle.

The truth is, the Milwaukee Bucks will be in the playoffs and contend before the Brewers do.

See you at the Bradley Center in 07-08.......I hope.

I was at a "sold-out" Brewers game recently. Most of the "fans" that were in my section showed up around the 3rd inning and those same fans left after the 7th inning. Brewers fans are having a great time because they are winning and it's the place to be. Baseball fans are not enjoying it because Brewers fans are coming late, standing and screaming for no reasons, trying to start the stupid wave, drinking obnoxiously, and then trying to show how much (when it's actually very little) they know about baseball. Brewers fans go for the party - Baseball fans go for the game!!!

In addition, I can't stand NBA basketball because of the insistance on playing loud music over the action. I'd rather have people smoking next to me than having to listen to "Crazy Train" following every timeout.

Obviously it's easier to get into the NBA playoffs than in baseball. Had the George Karl Bucks had to make the playoffs under MLB rules they only would have made it in 2001.

There are some additional factors working against the Bucks than just the sausages.

1.) Being outside for the game.

2.) Better seasonal weather for the Brewers in terms of looking out the window and deciding to go.

3.) No Warriors, Panthers, Admirals or Wave to draw attendance away. The Brewers only have the Packers, Badger football and Bucks in April overlap their season. And only for one month.
