I never realized how many people are affected with vision impairments. Although looking back on it now, the few experiences that I had were not pleasant ones. Like there was a girl, who was legally blind, went to my high school and shr did some of the most interesting pieces of art I have ever seen. Or the two people that regularly came in to the grocery store I where I worked. Every chance I got I jumped up to help them find items, because not only did it get me away from the cashier monotony, but there was always an enjoyable conversation in between finding the right cheese or vegetable. No matter what “impairment” they may have I was never afraid or took pity on them. They are people just as you and I, and I took pleasure in making their everyday lives easier.
The "Dining in the Dark" experience was one I thought only happened on CSI episodes and exotic food television shows. But it is premiering in the Midwest for the first time this Sunday, right here in Milwaukee. The unconventional dinner is helping raise funds for this critical cause despite the recession. The goal, in addition to raising funds, is for guests to find a deeper understanding of what it is like to be blind. Dining in the Dark originated in Germany in 2003 and, as its name implies, the experience allows seeing individuals to eat an entire meal in complete darkness, with the aid of low lighting and a blindfold. The national eye-opening fundraiser will debut for the first time in the Midwest right here in Milwaukee on Sunday, November 8, to benefit the Center for Blind and Visually Impaired Children and Badger Association. A special menu was created by Adam Siegel, a James Beard award-winning chef, to delight the senses of smell, taste and touch. This event is not only about the unique experience but also the unique opportunity to help people in our community out.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 5-9pm Bacchus - 925 E Wells - $250.00 per guest
