As I pondered what to write for my first ever Blog I came to the realization “I really don’t have anything important to share with the world.” But I felt the urge to hear the clickety clack of my keyboard so here I write.

I used to rent movies on a very regular basis, probably three to five times a week. Paying upwards of three dollars just to use the movie for the night and then forget to return it for a week. At times I would go to the movie rental store down the road to rent a movie and up spending $60 + when I saw he 4 for $20 bins or whatever promo they had running at the time.

Then one day while wondering the beautiful Brady street. I stopped in our local used media mega store and my eyes grew when I saw the huge selection in front of me. I found tons of great titles and personal favorites scattered among many I’ve never seen and just as many that I’ve always wanted to see for anywhere from three dollars on up, the price I was previously paying to “borrow” movies for a single night. So what did I do? I bought a couple movies. Over the course of the next couple day I enjoyed sitting at home and watching the movies without the worry of forgetting to bring them back or the threat of late fees.

I week or so later I ventured back to my local movie rental giant and rented one of the new releases and promptly forgot to return it for over a week. When I finally remembered “oh crap! I still have that damn rental movie!” I returned it and decided from now on that I was done renting. Partially due to my irresponsibility and lack of memory but also I came to the realization that I could increase my movie collection in stead of just watching my wallet wither away with nothing to show for it each time I rent a movie.

And best yet I have found movies there that I have not been able to find in any movie store. I recently read over AFI’s (American Film Institute) 100 years 100 movies list and found a lot of titles that I have heard of and made a list of the ones that I really wanted to see. Over the past couple months I have seen my movie collection almost double in size for a fraction of the cost of any major retailer. And seen my movie collection broaden from being majority popular new releases, to I vast wide selection of every genre and classics.

Will I still rent new releases now and again? I’m sure I will. Will I do it with the frequency I did in the past? No. While at the same time I am watching my soon to be obsolete DVD collection grow to a beautiful array of popular and obscure movie titles.

Netflix dude. $13 a month gets you two movies at a time with unlimited returns and the ability to stream some titles right to your computer/tv. They have a great selection and I find it, especially through the instant streaming, an awesome way to take a chance on a movie that you normally wouldn't watch. Why would you pay $10 to buy a film you might like when for $13 a month you can rent 20 films a month you might like?

Honestly.. the best reason to rent is just to watch a film. In my opinion there is no real reason to buy unless you plan on watching the movie alot... i.e. children's films where the kids keep begging to watch the movie again and again.

Honestly you are not aware of the new Redboxes taking over here in Milwaukee? Check it out.. www.redbox.com where you can rent a movie for a buck, and if you are late, it costs a buck, and if you keep the movie for 21 nights its yours. My favorite part is that you can reserve online, and pick up the film at the Redbox of your choice!

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
