I used to love "Extreme Home Makeover." Then it got beyond cheesy for me, crying every week, however one story really hit home for me. The story of the Vardons.
The Vardons are a deaf couple Larry and Judy, who fell in love and got married. They had 2 boys, an older boy named Stefan who is hearing and a blind autistic son named Lance. Stefan is the biggest bridge between his parents and Lance, and they are true lifelong buddies.
They were able to get on Extreme Home Makeover due to communication issues. How would a mother who depended on her vision to communicate, due to being deaf since birth, be able to communicate with her blind son who depended on sound?
I remember the team got to work, and figured out a computer thing where Judy would type what she wanted Lance to know in a computer, and it would print out into Braille for Lance to read. Cool eh? They also made a huge play room for Lance, since he is autistic, allowing him some freedom. They also installed security cameras since Lance liked to wander off......
Well right now their home is up for foreclosure. The Extreme Home Makeover team didn't pay off their mortgage like they do for many people who are on the show now, and after the show was over the tax assessment on their property tax jumped big time. Also, Larry who worked for Chrysler just got the boot not that long ago, and trying to deal with the medical bills for Lance as well, and by taking out a second mortgage made everything just too much to bear.
