When Wauwatosa resident Danielle Horner began building her “Race for the Cure” team this past May, she simply wanted a 25-member team to raise $1,000 to help in the battle against breast cancer. With the support of her family and friends at Elite Fitness & Racquet Clubs, Danielle and her siblings, who lost their mother to breast cancer earlier this year, produced an 88-member community team, raising nearly $12,000 and placing third in the 2007 Susan G. Komen Milwaukee Race For the Cure.
This was Horner’s ninth year racing in the Susan G. Komen Milwaukee Race for the Cure, and her first race without her mother at her side. “I’m very passionate about this race, not just because of my mother, but because breast cancer affects the lives of so many families, ” Horner said. “However, this year, we really wanted our success to be a tribute to her.”
In honor of Horner’s mother, the “Patti Martin Memorial Team” wore pink bandanas. The team’s fund-raising efforts took third place, topping hundreds of larger corporate teams. In the community team category, the team placed second. “I know my mom was watching over us. I could just feel it. And know she is proud of what we accomplished,” said Horner.
