88Nine Radio Milwaukee has taken a very aggressive approach to the coverage of Milwaukee culture. Beyond the work that put in recording segments, exploring different neighborhoods, highlighting people's positive work in the community and so on and so forth, it actively seeks to engage its listening audience through different creative challenges.
The latest collaboration with the public is the Remix Milwaukee project, which asks Milwaukeeans or those that frequent the city to record appropriate audio to act as a sample for the composition of original music.
The project is already taking off, according to Assistant Programming Director Jordan Lee.
"Someone took their phone out during that wicked rain storm that we had the other night, recorded the sound of the rain and submitted to sound to the website. Milwaukee producer Reason went onto the website and took it and made a great beat out of it."
If you aren't a musician or producer but you still want participate, that's OK too. Radio Milwaukee has lined up a talented group of Milwaukee soundsters to reinterpret the sounds that you gather.
Why do a project that remixes the sounds of Milwaukee? Lee explains.
"It's a reflection of our desire to be more inclusive. It's completely up to Milwaukee to decide what this is. It's also about our mission to Milwaukee music. We provide service to the Milwaukee music community all the time. We're not going to stop that.
"What we're doing with this is we can start something different from the ground up to create more Milwaukee music. It's not going to be restricted by our on-air programming style. This is made for the people and by the people. This has to do with the station's mission, which is to reflect the city of Milwaukee as best we can and showcase that."
Any person who is savvy with an iPhone or Android phone is the perfect person for this task.
