The question came up during the baseball game Friday night. The commercial for the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G came on and my friend, Beth, wondered "What is that song in this ad? Who sings it?"
Given the heavy rotation of that particular commercial -- which features Whoopi Goldberg, Phil Jackson, Chevy Chase, Jesse James, Dana Carvey and a host of other celebrities -- I'm sure that question has been asked a lot in various settings. As a public service to those who have wondered, here is the answer:
Song: "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out"
Artist: Cat Stevens
Stevens recorded for the song for the 1971 movie "Harold and Maude." It wasn't released on record until his 1984 album "Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. It also showed up on the 2003 album, "The Very Best of Cat Stevens."
That's probably more than you needed to know, but here are the lyrics and a video:
"If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out"
--Cat Stevens, 1971
Well
if you want to sing out
sing out.
And if you want to be free
be free
'Cause there's a million things to be
You know that there are.
And if you want to live high
live high
And if you want to live low
live low
'Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are
You can do what you want
The opportunity's on
And if you find a new way
you can do it today.
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
you see
Ah
it's easy
Ah
you only need to know
Well
if you want to say yes
say yes
And if you want to say no
say no
Cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are
And if you want to be me
be me
And if you want to be you
be you
Cause thee's a million things to do
You know that there are

i thought it was pretty obvious that this was Cat Stevens. I'm guessing Beth's familiarity with music starts with Ashlee Simpson and ranges back to Jessica Simpson when she wants to get "old school." You make me wanna.....sccrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeam.

I really do'nt like that they use this song...Cat Stevens made his fortune in THIS country then decided to become one of Iotolla Kameini's (sorry for spelling errors dont want to look up!) biggest backers and call AMERICANS Infidels.....well, we were we supported HIM bought his Albums ...played his music and made him rich! SO WHY ARE WE USING HIS MUSIC TO STILL PROMOTE THINGS??????
