A series of classic Maxell ads combined a tribute to a classic rock video with our passion for laughing about misheard lyrics. The thing is, these ads were made for the U.K. market, so the songs used might not be all that familiar to American audiences.
Taking cues from Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" video in which the singer tosses aside a series of cards with key words from the song's lyrics, these ads featured actors doing the same with lyrics to post-punk Skids' classic "Into the Valley" and Desmond Dekker's early reggae international hit "Israelites."
The catch is that the lyrics are all wrong, although if you don't already know the words, the fake lyrics are so good that you might not realize they're not the real lyrics.
That's where Maxell comes in. A better recording of the song, perhaps, the actor thinks, might have let him better decipher the words. Here are the videos below, as well as Dylan's classic, which was later "re-made" by REM and other rock acts.
Of course, the fact that these are ads for recordable cassettes gives you a clue that these ads are more than 20 years old.

Wow - an oldie but a goodie. Those spots won big at the 1990 Cannes Film Fest. Great stuff.
