I love the December holidays, but call me "Scrooge" when it comes to holiday music. I don't mind it playing in the background at shops -- it does invoke holiday spirit -- but I would never, ever listen to it on the radio or pop in a Christmas CD at home.
The James Brown "Funky Christmas" is OK, and I do like Vince Guaraldi's tunes in "A Charlie Brown Christmas," but otherwise, I'm left with an empty stocking over here.
It's possible I'm simply not aware of the really good stuff. Is there such a thing? Are there holiday CDs that you adore and think I might, too? As a Jesus-lovin' half-Jew with Buddhist and Pagan undertones, I'm open to pretty much anything.

Personally, I think it's a matter of a person's individual taste - I think that the recordings of the 40s sum up the holidays in a 'traditional' way, however, to really feel the spirit of the season, including it's pagan roots, I like Loreena McKennitt and a couple of the Projekt label's solstice compilations. http://www.projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00092 And, because I grew up in the 70s, John Denver will always encompass the holiday season to me.

If you can find it: The Ventures' original Christmas album is great. Surf-rock versions that could actually be considered "cool". (I've heard a later one that wasn't so much, however) Plus it's nice to have the Christmas feel, with a different twist and no annoying vocals for a change. My favorite modern x-mas song is by The Raveonettes (which I believe is just titled simply "Christmas Song"). Instant classic.

Alt-country tandem of Kelly Willis and husband Bruce Robison team up on "Happy Holidays". Some standards, some obscure tunes and one hilarious "Oklahoma Christmas". Try it you'll like it.
