Saturday night at the Mountain Dew Rock Stage, local boys The Gufs rocked an overflow stage area full of their faithful and many newer, younger fans.
Almost seven years since the release of the band's last album, The Gufs have returned to Milwaukee to begin work on their seventh studio recording. Sure, they've been on an indefinite hiatus from music and as band members will say "more importantly the music business," but the Gufs still sound good and, they still seem to love their place on a stage.
With rain falling and lightning threatening, The Gufs poured through favorites and some new tunes, too. As they often do at Summerfest gigs, they covered "Come Together," and let the crowd sing them off with "Under Breath" from their first album, 1991's "Staring Into the Sun."
Coming back for an encore, Morgan, Dejan, Goran and Scott did "Give Back Yourself" as a tribute to a recently deceased fan. They ended, of course, with their signature single, "Smile."
All in all, nothing fancy from The Gufs on Saturday. Just comfortable, good tunes for the fans that continue to love them after all of these years.
For you loyal fans, the band's next gig is at "The Taste of Lincoln" on the corner of Lincoln and Fullerton in Chicago, at 4 p.m. on Sat., July 29.
