Planetizen is out with a list of reader generated and voted in "Top 100 Urban Thinkers." Former Milwaukee Mayor and current President and CEO, Center for the New Urbanism, John Norquist, lands at No. 98.
The publication ran a poll for one month and notes, "...this is a definitive list; voters were given free reign to submit and vote for whomever they liked." And, it says the "thinkers that are here are a fascinating bunch, ranging from planners of the past like Baron Haussmann, the civic planner that changed the face of Paris in the 19th century, to active thinkers of today like Scott Bernstein, President and Co-Founder of the Center for Neighborhood Technology."
Urbanist, writer and activist Jane Jacobs is ranked No. 1.

Milwaukee misses his vision/determination deeply. Look no further than posts like Master C's to see how myopic Milwaukee can be sometimes.

Norquist understands how cities work. Like Jane jacobs, he understands what they need and their HUGE potential for quality living. The 3rd Ward, the 5th Ward, Walker's Point, Near West Side are all better as a result of his leadership. Milwaukee misses him dearly.

Hey John, where's all that development where the 145 spur used to be? Maybe you were doing some light railing in your office when you dreamed up that museum excuse to knock down a freeway.

Yeah, cities were in such better shape in the 70's/80's

Replace "Thinker" with "Drinker" and I'd say his rating is right on.
