Rumors fly, and we hear them daily, especially as Milwaukee's Downtown continues to grow and flourish. Residents, brokers and business owners -- everyone loves to speculate on what's next in retail, restaurants and more. "
One rumor that's flying around is that Crate and Barrel is scouting a second area location in the Third Ward. It's out there, even on this magazine's message boards and talkbacks. Many in the neighborhood have said they'd "love a CB2," Crate and Barrel's smaller and trendier store.
The success of Milwaukee's independent retail has helped attract more national retailers to our city. Nationals like Antropologie, which came to the Third Ward because of the neighborhood's already strong position as a fashion center, and Urban Outfitters (on the East Side) are already showing that Milwaukee retail is growing. Is CB2 next?
Sorry, but this seems to be just rumor. Pam D., at Crate and Barrel customer service, told me, "Currently, there are no plans for a Crate and Barrel store in your area, but we do appreciate your interest. You can purchase our products, including furniture, from the Crate and Barrel Web site or by requesting a catalogue. We hope you find this a convenient way to shop."
Interpret this corporate comment as you will, a brush off or a definite no. Who knows? I do know that as a Downtown resident, I love that these types of rumors continue to fly. Heard any yourself?

Either the JS or Mil Maga did a recent interview w/ the owner of C&B - he has a vacation home out in the woods near Eagle/Old World Wisconsin. He said that the market here is too small to support a 2nd C&B so that makes sense.

Didn't Pam know that there's a C&B in Wauwatosa? It strikes me as odd that she wouldn't throw business in that direction.
