What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Feb. 20, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.

As I reported last month, things are really starting to move at he redevelopment project of the former Pabst Brewery site, known as The Brewery. My sadness and anger over the missed opportunities of Pabst City are gone and now for the first time since 1996, people are once again working and living at the former Pabst Brewery site.

Once piece of the development puzzle is still coming together and that's retail. Greater Downtown Milwaukee is still in dire need of more retail options. The Third Ward has grown into the city's fashion and cultural center, but Downtown proper is poised to pounce on the housing boom and unique spaces available in and around The Brewery.

Local retailers are receiving "priority" consideration for spaces at The Brewery, and the Zilber Group is actively pursing several local and national tenants.

Since the neighborhood has such great access, it is immediately east of I-43, the main north-south corridor, with visibility to over 200,000 vehicles per day, it is well positioned for big and small retail and restaurants.

Which ones, though, would you like to see there? What's missing in Downtown? What do you want and need?

I'll start with a short list and please chime in using the talkbacks.

-Another Milwaukee Ale House-type brewpub
-Romano's Macaroni Grill
-Nike Town
-ESPN Zone
-A 24-hour Golden Apple-type restaurant (Chicago-based)
-Lucky Strike

I'd like to see a Diesel denim/jeans store. The seem to thrive in historic districts (check out the store they have in Portland, Oregon in an old firehouse)

I would like to see local companies do new concepts at The Brewery. I don't want to see another Umami Moto or Mo's. Use this space to develop a new concept and perhaps do a test run before taking it to other cities. Cities like Columbus, OH and Madison are home to companies that develop concepts before taking them regional. If we can't have new local concepts, I would recommend regional chains that aren't represented here yet. First Watch for breakfast and lunch. Perhaps Bravo would place their higher concept, Brio, in the Brewery. Lucky Strike would be nice but they are struggling in every city except LA so I doubt they would come. Gameworks recently came out of bankruptcy and has only built 20 sites across the county. They probably think Schaumberg is close enough. Whatever happened to the Montreal Bread Company that was supposed to open next to Fratello's in the Third Ward? This spot would be perfect if they want to relocate.

Not a local chain, but I'd love to fill my Double Double Jones by having an In N Out burger here.
