Apparently, a little shoot of Soho sprouted in Walker's Point recently.
"A gentleman came into our market from Chicago and said it was a lot like antique markets he'd seen in Soho," says Jim Dieter, owner of Blackhawk Antiques Market, 633 S. 12th St.
Blackhawk Antiques is an indoor marketplace that opened on June 4 featuring booths from a variety of antique dealers selling items that run between $6 and $25,000.
"We have a lot of good quality furniture," says Dieter. "Including Knoll, (Charles) Eames, French, traditional and designer furniture."
Art, costume and high-end jewelry, glassware, mirrors, knick-knacks, a player piano and scores of other antiques are available in the Walker's Point space that's more than 100 years old. Most exciting is the range of styles, from museum-quality loveseats to funky '70s chairs.
"My booth is the odd ball," says Scott Genke, whose booth features '60s and '70s pop, space age and mid-century modern furnishings and objects.
Genke, who designed Apollo Cafe, Mantra Lounge and Redroom, also provides custom design and fabriction services for residential and commercial projects.
All of the booths are artistically and sensibly arranged, with dividing walls decorated with crown molding and nice colors of paint.
"The space is very attractive and professional," says Dieter. "Whether you live in a loft or a Wauwatosa home, we have items displayed in a way that you can imagine what it will look like."
Dieter will also launch an on-line shop, offering every item in the store. "It's like E-bay," he says. "We have over 1,000 pages."
The Web site will be advertised all over the country, Dieter says.
Dieter chose the name in tribute to the tanneries that once operated in the area. There was a Blackhawk tannery in the neighborhood, and a faded sign still hangs near his building.
Dieter also restores furniture for the Wisconsin State Capitol Project. "I did restoration for the East and South wings of the state capitol," he says.
Blackhawk Antique Market's Web site is blackhawkantiquemarket.com.

My husband & I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and seeing his wonderful antique store in August, 2007. We are from the middle of Kansas and went there to purchase four corbels for an old house we are renovating. Jim is a great guy! We truly appreciate all the work he has put in to the building ... it is a beauty!! We really enjoyed visiting with him and made some new friends while in his store, that were kind enough to show us around Milwaukee. We spent the day in Milwaukee, looked at alot of the beautiful downtown buildings, and drove past the Pabst mansion then had lunch .... beautiful city. Thanks to Jim for his hospitality.

Terri said: Great Antique mall. I spoke to a gentleman named Jim that was very helpful and polite, although I do remember his employee Tom making me feel almost as if I was a burden when I walked in and somewhat being fake nice. Your typical snob on his high horse is all I can say. Great Building in my opinion, could see this being a restaraunt or Bar in the future as the Antique business continues to decline. Thanks for the service James , now can the snot and you'll have a great business for many years to come.

Patty said: Very Nice mall, Two Floors. Merchadise doesnt change a whole lot, but is of a high quality. Owner (Tim or Tom) came off as very snobby, rude and stange, when asked for help with showcase. Aside from the introverted owner, I'd recommend this mall to anyone with a passion for antiques. One of the best in Milwaukee.
