I have two children and I did yoga throughout my entire pregnancy for both of them. During my first pregnancy I was new to the Milwaukee area and really didn't have a set yoga studio that I always went to so I just tried to modify the poses in the regular yoga classes that I took around town. For my second pregnancy I was so happy when I found out that INVIVO taught Pregnancy Yoga. I could definitely tell a difference between my two pregnancies and the little bit extra that I paid was definitely worth it. Infact, I now realize that during my first pregnancy when I trying to modify poses I was actually putting myself in danger because there are so many more risks than I thought. You can defiantly tell that Maria and Nicole (prenatal yoga teachers) have an additional certification to teach pregnancy yoga. I also had a prenatal message at Invivo from Hannah which I highly recommend.
We offer several prenatal yoga classes at Invivo www.invivofitness.com . Classes are held on Tuesday at 10am, Thursday at 6:30pm and Sunday at noon. I teach on Thursdays and Maria teaches the other classes. Both of us have additional specialty training in prenatal yoga. Both of us are also moms. There are multiple precautions in yoga for pregnancy and most standard yoga teacher trainings offer just a few hours on the topic. Although some instructors take the time to study this topic further, most have just a general idea of what can be done. A prenatal class specifically addresses childbirth preparation and you gain a sense of community with the other class members. You also don't have to feel shy about your changing body. We laugh a lot in my class.
Taraann, In my experience, a skilled instructor will be able to offer you specific instruction to your current state (pregnancy, injury, etc.) in a regular yoga class. They will also advice you on alternative poses in class if there are ones you shouldn't be performing. Yama Yoga was great for this, I just took a class that fit my skill level and the instructors advised me as we went along.
