Sound-off: Is Facebook a waste of time?
You always have friends on Facebook. Well, sort of.

Anyone who uses the social networking site Facebook knows that it can suck up your time. Consequently, many places of business block employees' access to Facebook to discourage work time spent taking quizzes about old TV shows or "friending" forgotten grade school chums.

However, most would agree that there is an upside to Facebook, too. At the very least, it can provide free entertainment.

But what are your thoughts? Is Facebook worthwhile or is it a big waste of time? Sound off, readers, on cyber social networking.

Facebook is great tool both personally and professionally. Facebook allows people to reconnect and stay connected despite their busy lives. It makes people feel like they have a social life even if they don't get out very much. In general, Facebook has a lot of entertainment value and it can be helpful professionally, too. You never know who you're going to "run into" on Facebook.

Facebook is a lame time sucker. Facebook is for people who have too much time on their hands or for people who lack a real social life. No one really cares what you're doing right now or which tarot card most represents your personality. Personally, I'd rather spend my time really talking to and meeting new people in the real world.

I deleted my Facebook account two months ago and have not missed it at all. I added so many "friends" that it just became white noise. And I thought " do I really care if this person is thinking about buying new shoes?" And then I thought "do other people really care about what I am doing?". If the person is a real friend, they can call me and find out what's going on in my life.

Canceled my myspace acct. about 3 years ago & have not missed social networking at all. Canceled roadrunner over a year ago. My live has only changed for the better. Don't you have to be a college student to use Facebook and what is Twitter anyway?

Totally (well "mostly") agree with sconnie8. While FB and MySpace are useful, they have actually significantly decreased the amount of time people spend face-to-face and on the phone (which is a much more direct form of communication). But that is the same reason I am so sad to see text messages ruin the world. It's as if people now reflexively text message people when they are afraid of hearing a response they don't want to deal with (ie. telling someone you can't make it to dinner/drinks/a game, or asking that girl from the bar "Remember me?"- call the dang chick!! We're humans- we still have a voice ya know!) . I totally realize the usefulness of "texting" when in a loud bar or at a concert and trying to locate people, etc. But the way text messaging has exploded, I think it (like the internet one can argue) has really diminished traditional face-to-face and voice-to-voice conversation. Just my opinion, but I wish people would chill out a bit on the texts. I read on one of the news channels the other day that a guy actually had the nerve to DIVORCE his wife via a text message. As Sports Illustrated would say in their famous column, this is "A Sign that the Apocolypse is Upon Us". lol. But (oops)- I digress from the topic here. My bad.
