There seems to be a special day for everything and everyone, so why shouldn't public gardens get their day in the sun? With that thought in mind, the non-profit group American Public Gardens declared National Public Gardens Day on Friday, May 8.
National Public Gardens Day is a celebration to raise awareness of America's public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental awareness, plant and water conservation and community education.
Celebrate National Public Gardens Day by visiting a local public garden, such as the Boerner Botanical Gardens, or consider starting a community garden in your neighborhood. Check the public gardens Web site for more information.

A broader local effort is happening as part of the Memorial Day Victory Garden Blitz. Many new vegetable gardens will be created at area homes and churches, including my house in Bay View, and a celebration will happen that evening at the new Kilbourn Reservoir Victory Garden on North Avenue.
