Attention single women: Milwaukee's got available men (and good ones!)
The Daily Beast says Milwaukee is full of men who are "good-catches." Do you agree, ladies?

What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Oct. 22, 2009 at 8:41 a.m.

All the single ladies! (All the single ladies.) Guess what? The Daily Beast has good news.

In a recent article, the online magazine reported on the country's hottest markets for available men and as it turns out, Milwaukee's not too bad a place to be if you're looking for love. It ranked No. 16 (out of 36 cities with 500,000 or more residents), which places it just about in the middle.

Sure, it could be better -- Atlanta, Boston and Seattle snagged the top three spots. But at least we're not Jacksonville, Fla., which has hardly any single men, or El Paso, Texas, which ranks quite low in education.

So, what makes Milwaukee a happy medium? "Forbes ranked America's brewery capital among its top cities for singles this year, with high marks in job growth and 'coolness'." The Beast analysis goes on to say, "Move over, Madison. It was also once deemed the 'sexiest city' by Marie Claire magazine, to the surprise of humble locals."

It mentions Mi-key's, 811 N. Jefferson St., as a popular meeting spot.

The Web site explains its criteria. When hunting for eligible bachelors, the Beast used data from the U.S. Census to find the cities with the highest percentage of single men between the ages of 18 and 49. This accounted for 60 percent of the vote.

But what counts as a "good catch?"

"We gave credit to cities with the highest percentage of single men with four-year college degrees. While individual charm and success vary, as a whole, this rewards men with brains and future earnings power (since a college degree typically adds $1 million to a person's lifetime salary). We weighted this 20 percent."

Lastly, they measured ways of meeting these guys, tallying up the number of gyms and nightlife options -- bars, restaurants, clubs and theaters -- per capita. This combined information accounted for the remaining 20 percent of the vote.

So, single ladies, what are your thoughts? Is Milwaukee a decent city in which to meet men?

My theory (and purely a theory, no empirical evidence to back this up, admittedly) is that Milwaukee has a lot of appealing single guys because there are a lot of people here who got married very young and ended up getting divorced. The sad truth is that, when couples with kids divorce, the man is still considered "a catch" by a lot of women, while the single mom might as well have some sort of leprosy in terms of her "appeal" in the dating market. Single dads can still date unmarried, kid-free women. Single moms have little luck in that department. This is a gross generalization, I realize, but Milwaukee has a lot of relatively young (late 30s to early 40s) guys in this boat. There are also more and more Milwaukeans (of both genders) that choose to wait until later in life to get married. That's never a bad thing in this player's book.

Take a look at the pic in the attached article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ian_thomsen/10/22/isiah.magic/index.html# Looks like it's basketball players more than volleyball players who like the same sex! :)

what's with the guy and the "heil hitler" salute? do women really find "white power" attractive? "i stay fit, i'm a good cook, and i'm really, really into Hitler, but not in that order (wink)"

I didn't say that. But those guys have that Top Gun look to them. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
