Have you noticed a lack of blue mailboxes?
I've noticed a few conversations on Facebook regarding blue corner mailboxes and how they seem to be "disappearing." In Riverwest, for example, there are at least two mailboxes I can think of that are no longer in service.
When I moved to Walker's Point a year ago, I was surprised by how few collection boxes were in the neighborhood. I actually go to the post office which is about six blocks from my house to send mail.
According to Sean Hargadon, spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, there have not been any changes in the number of collection boxes in Milwaukee during the past year. He did not have statistics on the removal of boxes prior to a year ago, however.
Hargadon says the post office sometimes conducts "density tests" to determine if a particular mailbox is getting enough action.
"A collection box might be removed if it doesn't get 25 pieces of mail or more every day for two weeks," he says.
Interesting. But has anyone else noticed a shortage of mailboxes in your neighborhood?
@Jimmy_Jones: Cool - thanks for pointing that out. Of course the closest collection box on the map they provide doesn't exist and has a listed address of a completely different street and town. But what do we expect from the USPS? :-) Other features are cool, though.
The USPS has a free app that you can download, it has the locations of the mailboxes & their pickup times listed. Now, I had one of those brown mail relay boxes nearby me. Thank god they just removed it, it was basically a billboard for graffiti that the USPS never cleaned but once a year.
I just moved to MKE (upper east side) and noticed the paucity of blue mailboxes. I even called the post office to ask where they were - but alas, the person I spoke with didn't know how to find out. You'd think a Google Maps app would easily fix that. I mean, they have to know to pick the mail up, right?
I used to have one right across the street from my house - it was awesome. But, alas, it was taken away about a year ago.
