Would you give up your bag at gunpoint?
I say just give it up.

What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published July 29, 2009 at 8:09 p.m.

Summer, unfortunately, brings a swell of street crime, including shootings. Knock on wood, I have not been robbed or mugged at gunpoint, so whenever I hear that a victim gets injured after refusing to give up a backpack or purse to someone with a weapon, I get really judgmental.

To me, whatever is inside a purse or backpack is not worth a life or a limb. It's not even worth a principle. I understand the perspective that "by giving in" you feel like you're allowing crime to continue, but you don't really have a choice. One way or another, the bag is going to be taken, with or without bullets.

Also, mid-robbery is no time to "man up" or mouth off when someone's threatening to end your life. Just give the a-holes what they want and thank your freaking lucky stars that you get to go to work the next day.

I comparing a night/day difference between two bordering states with night/day laws. size has nothing to do with it, and poverty has nothing to do with it either. because you can debate whether crime begets poverty or poverty begets crime till the cows come home. I will maintain that crime creates poverty because of the quality of people who commit the crimes. When you are a thief, and will rob your neighbors, that creates poverty. No one who can live elsewhere will stick around once crime starts rising, and then all you have is the poor that can't move elsewhere staying there, with the criminals ruling the streets. If you are poor, but a good person, you won't rob, you will work hard. If you are a criminal, whether poor or having money, you will rob regardless. And then, if the government doesn't give the people the power to fight back, crime soars.

yeahhh...doesn't the news make it sound so easy? Or you can look at the income discrepancy between DC and Virginia, and that is just the beginning. DC has a terrible poverty rate, and with poverty comes crime. Virginia, on the other hand, while still having poverty, is also thousands of times the size of DC, so it doesn't really count. Try comparing similar sized cities.

I saw on the news that DC, where you are not allowed to carry, has one of the highest crime rates in the country. Conversely, Virginia, which borders DC, does allow citizens to carry, and they have one of the lowest crime rates. What magically happens at that border that makes the crime rate drop. The fear in a criminal's mind that lets him know that he may be in danger in a robbery on this side of the border, but the other side of the border is a city full of defenseless marks.
