I'm a sucker for these Forbes.com listing and rankings, so I'm taking the bait on their latest list. The new "Best Cities for Singles" list puts Milwaukee at No. 9 above the likes of Austin, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Houston, Charlotte and others.
The eight cities above Milwaukee? In order from one to eight, here they are:
According to Lauren Sherman (no relation) at Forbes.com her publication "ranked 40 of the largest continental U.S. metropolitan statistical areas in seven different categories: coolness, cost of living alone, culture, job growth, online dating participation, nightlife and the ratio of singles to the entire population of the metro. Each metro was assigned a ranking of 1 to 40 in each category, based on quantitative data, and all categories were weighted equally. The ranks were then totaled to determine the final rankings."
Milwaukee's job growth figure and subjective "coolness" number hampered its overall rank while Brew City's nightlife (No. 2 overall, only Vegas beat us), living cost and culture numbers moved our town up in the rankings.
These lists are always fun and subjective, but for a complete explanation of the methodology that Forbes used click here.

RE: not if you're 40! If you can't meet people in Milwaukee that's your problem not the city's.

Nightlife: Nightlife is based on the number of restaurants, bars and nightclubs per capita in each standard metropolitan area. Data was provided by AOL City Guide.

How do you quantitatively measure "nightlife"? Bars per capita? Anyway, I think Milwaukee has a great nightlife scene for a city its size, but I'm not sure that we have more or better nightlife than New York. On any given night there are more concerts and other live music, more theater, more restaurants, etc. in New York City than in probably any other city in the country, maybe in the world.
