Can you politely "unfriend" on Facebook?

What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Oct. 30, 2009 at 1:35 p.m.
Tags: facebook, facebook friends, unfriending

A real friend from the real world told me she wanted to clean up her Facebook page and "unfriend" a bunch of people who weren't really friends. The fewer the friends, the less minutiae she has to wade through to find the information she really cares about. I get it.

She asked me if she should send a message to the people she's unfriending -- explaining that it was nothing personal, but that she's trying to spend less time on Facebook -- or if she should just ax them quickly and quietly.

I think she should just delete them. There is no way to tell someone you are unfriending them without basically saying, "Sorry, you didn't make the cut."

But what do you think? Is it a nice idea to send a message to soon-to-be ex-Facebook friends, telling them she hopes they have a great life but she's not going to monitor it anymore, or should she just clean cyber house without looking back?

I have over 1k friends since I play Mafia Wars. Its well known that the max number of friends you can have is 5k. I have grouped everyone together, that I have as close personal friends, close mafia friends, and just mafia people. So if I get way too close to the 4,500 mark, I can just delete the Mafia people, and most of the time since they have serveral thousand friends themselves, they don't realize that they have been deleted. Makes it easy.

Just delete 'em. My first go-around on facebook took me up to 200 friends. It all just became white noise. I asked myself if I hadn't cared about people from high school for the past ten years, why should I care now. I ended up deleting my entire facebook account and took a break for a while. I recently rejoined and keep my friends to people I actually have real interaction with (close friends and family). I keep it below 30 friends. For someone you don't actually talk to to get mad about being deleted is crazy.

I did this..This girl (who is the fiance of my fella's best friend).. got on my nerves...and I hadn't met her yet...I deleted her quietly, and I got an email asking me what was wrong and blah blah blah...when I hadn't responded (because I was busy) she harassed her fiance and my fella as to why I hadn't responded...So I 'friended' her again to shut her up...but I realized....FB (for me) is for family and friends that I know in person...So I defriended her...and sent a kind and gentle explanation to her fiance so he could explain it to her (because she appeared to be insane)...She read her fiance's email...and saw the email and unleashed a tirade... I think if the person is close and what not..you may want to send an email...otherwise just delete.
