Is there really any gift that can show dad just how much we appreciate all he's done for us? Probably not, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
Dads tend to take a it more thought when it comes to securing the perfect gift, so we at OnMilwaukee.com thought we'd help you out this week by filling in you on what we plan to do for our dads this Father's Day, June 21.

Although my dad deserves, at the very least, a vacation to the destination of his choice by way of a private jet, I will be giving him a framed photo of my sons instead. Every spring, I have their photo professionally taken and then give them as gifts for Mother's Day and Father's Day. This year's photo turned out particularly cute, except I had to bribe my son with mass amounts of sugar to wear a button-front shirt. Also, my dad is a huge baseball fan, so a trip to Miller Park might happen in the near future. Hopefully, he'll let me pay for a brat and a beer, too, but he's usually pretty quick with the wallet.

My dad's a real family man, and it's not hard to see why he's such a fun father: he's still a kid at heart. I think he gets as much pleasure coaching his kids' sport teams or taking us to an amusement park as he does hitting a round of golf with his buddies. For my dad, the best gift is an adventurous day of activity with the family that he doesn't have to plan. I'll buy the tickets, make the dinner reservations and do all the arranging and driving -- all he has to do is rest up for a long day of fun.

I'm sworn to secrecy on dad's gift this year, since it's going to be a collaborative effort. In general, dad doesn't need any more ties, socks, golf balls or grilling gear. I think the best gift you can give is time. A ballgame. A round of golf. An afternoon of fishing. A Saturday morning breakfast trip. A backyard barbecue, perhaps. A couple frosty beverages. A long twilight walk with the dog and a nice cigar.

For the last 10 years or so, we've spent Father's Day gambling away hard earned cash at the Arlington Horse Track. Perhaps casual in-family competition coupled with disappointing losses and anger-fueled ticket tearing isn't the most loving tribute to my father, but it's all in laughing fun. Every year, we head down the racetrack, place a few bets, check out horses on the paddock and risk a few trifectas. The perfectly manicured track is surrounded by sun soaked families and specialty races honor dads all day long. Better than a tie or redesigned rake, it's always, always a great day.

As still a bit of a green dad, I don't have a lot of experience as a receiver of Father's Day gifts but I will say that two years ago I got a pass to the zoo that includes parking and I can't imagine a better gift. It allows me to spend a lot of fun time with my son at one of his favorite places. We use it all the time, in all weather. I don't want a tie and I don't want a "world's greatest dad" coffee mug. The one thing I want in life these days is more time with my kids. I suspect -- and I hope -- that's true of most dads. So, when shopping for a gift, keep that in mind and you likely can't go wrong.

Nuts For Daddy custard at Kopp's: Sure, you can buy dad a tie or a pair of socks, but he's probably more interested in something straight from the heart (and right to his stomach). Every year, Kopp's Frozen Custard offers up its annual Father's Day flavor, Nuts For Daddy. This is a flavor with enough meaning to simultaneously bring out dad's inner Beavis, but also touch his proud papa heart. The recipe consists of Beer Nuts in a rich caramel malt custard with ribbons of special hardening chocolate. Delicious? Check. Hilariously sophomoric? Check. Adorable to have a little kid present a pint to his / her favorite man in his / her life? Double check.
