Would you pay $3,000 a month to keep the gas light building flame lit?
In my recent article about spending time atop the Wisconsin Gas Light Building checking out "the flame," building manager Amy Schroeckenthaler discloses that it costs about $3,000 a month in energy bills to keep the flame a-glow.
This sparked numerous Talkbackers to give their opinions as to whether or not it's worth it. What do you think? Is the flame an integral part of Milwaukee's history and image that should remain aglow at all costs, or is it a big waste of money?
Keep it! That is in my top 3 pieces of Milwaukee art.
@BrewCityPaul: that's actually not a bad idea, but I don't think it's a concern for Milwaukee citizens as it belongs to a private organization, correct? Ultimately it's a unique piece of the city skyline by which people remember us. If they can afford to help beautify our city and keep it lit, I say go for it.
Keep it lit!!! It is an important part of the Milwaukee skyline!!!
Operate it from Thursday -Sunday and turn it off for Mon-Wed and you can cut the costs in half with most people not even noticing.
