During pregnancy, some women radically change their intake and stop drinking alcoholic -- and caffeinated -- beverages. Other women are less hardcore about their pregnancy diet, and will continue to imbibe. But what are your thoughts? Is it OK to drink alcohol while pregnant or not? Sound-off, OnMilwaukee.com readers.
Yes, a little alcohol is fine during pregnancy. Obviously you can't get loaded when you're pregnant, or drink alcohol on a daily basis, but the infrequent glass of wine or champagne to mark a special occasion is acceptable. Women in Europe do it all the time. Even my doctor said it was fine to have an alcoholic beverage once in a while, especially if it eases stress. Stress is worse for an unborn child than a little alcohol now and again.
No, not a drop of liquor during pregnancy. There are too many unknowns about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome so it's just not worth the risk. Plus, women are transitioning into the role of the mother during pregnancy, so it's important to start modeling acceptable behavior. Drinking during pregnancy, like smoking during pregnancy, is just wrong.

It's deinteresting discussion that invites many points. Restraint is good, moderation after the first trimester, definately no nightly black-outs! My mother drank in the 50's, and I'm fine (most of the time!!!).

A glass of wine or a beer are absolutely OK during any stage of pregnancy. And it's waaaay better than any enxiety pills.

1) It isnt going to help, and it might hurt. 2) If you drink, you are putting your desires ahead of your baby's well being, so you are already off to a bad start. 3) If you even have to think about this, then you have a problem.

Alcohol does most of its damage very early in pregnancy, so that first trimester should really be the ZERO ALCOHOL time. That's when Fetal Alcohol Syndrome kicks in. After that, well...an occasional drink or two is OK, but of course, a fetus can't handle very much so it should be reserved for something like a glass of champagne at a wedding or something- not a shot for every Packer touchdown.

I think a lot of it has to do with your doctor feeding you the info. I have two pregnant friends and they each have a different story on certain things. I heard it was only during the first trimester that all caffeine had to be avoided, and a glass of wine once in a while isn't a big deal.
