Do your kids need their "hairs" cut? Before you reach for a bowl and a pair of Fiskars, consider a professional haircut at a salon designed specifically for shorties.

Here's an annotated list of children's salons in Milwaukee and surrounding neighborhoods.

A Hair for Kids Salon, LLC

This salon specializes in kids' first haircut. For $14.95, kids / parents get a haircut, certificate, snippet of hair and a comb. Kids can pick to sit in a Lightning McQueen, Barbie, Harley-Davidson or princess pony chair. A Hair for Kids offers 'tween and teen haircuts for $14.95 and that includes use of PlayStation and Guitar Hero.

Also, this salon offers Mommy & Me or Daddy & Me haircuts, birthday parties and free nail painting every day from 4 to 6 p.m. Please call ahead for this service.

Just Kidding

The Whitefish Bay salon has six haircutting stations that kids can choose from, including two car chairs and a horse. Kids can sit on a parent's lap if they prefer. All six stations have DVD players and about 60 movies and programs, ranging from Barney to Sponge Bob.

The cost of a haircut is $18.50 for anyone under 9; $22 for those 9 and older, and it includes a wash.

Open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call to make an appointment.

Owner and mother of two Tammy Vander Heyden was a licensed cosmetologist for 18 years before she opened her salon this summer.

Kids cuts are $16, or $19 with a shampoo, cut and style. Kid-Do's also offers "child's first haircut" certificates for baby books, up-'dos, braids, highlighting, manicures and pedicures. They also offer "Glamour Partyz" for kids ages 5-12 at the Pewaukee location.

Kid-Do's offers four specialty hydraulic chairs disguised as a yellow bug car, pink Barbie Jeep, blue race car and a silver pick-up truck.

Kids haircuts cost $20 and include glitter or a barette. First haircuts are the same price, and include a pouch of hair and a poem for their scrapbook. All kids get a prize after their cut.

Kids can watch a DVD while getting their hair cut. Ear piercing is also available.

At Whimsikidz, kids under 9 years old can get a haircut for $18 or $20.50 with a wash. Haircuts cost $22 for kids 10 and older, or $24.50 with a wash. A bang trim is $6.

A "first time" haircut costs $26 and comes with a special gift, certificate and lock of hair. Whimsikidz offer manicures for $13 and pedicures for $18.
