The Milwaukee Art Museum, known for drawing artists from around the world, goes local today. This morning marked the opening of an exhibit entitled "Drawn to Nature" by Milwaukee's own JoAnna Poehlmann.
The Milwaukee-based artist is known for prints, drawings and books illustrating the natural world. Insects, birds and reptiles have infiltrated the artist's work since the 1970's. Her have been shown in such prestigious institutions as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
"JoAnna Poehlmann's work is animated by her extraordinary draughtsmanship, her keen observation, and her sly wit. Her work is at once intelligent, playful, and beautiful, and is informed by a deep knowledge of her artistic forbearers," Mary Weaver Chapin, MAM Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings explains. "The Museum is proud to present her work to our visitors. It is sure to delight."
Poehlmann's pieces will be on display in the museum through March 3, 2009.
