The Institute of Visual Arts (inova) at the UWM Peck School of the Arts launches its spring exhibitions Fri., Feb. 6 with a cycle of one-artist shows that run through April 25.

The spring cycle features new work by American artists Leslie Bellavance and Douglas Holst and Lin Chuan-chu of Taiwan in Gallery One. Work by painter, musician, designer and dj Dzine remains in Gallery One through September.

Bellavance will show two series, "Wall" and "Hedge," which form part of an ongoing body of photographic work that explores the modern-day relevance of ancient gardens.

Holst, an abstract painter, was commissioned by inova to create a gargantuan 9x50-ft. painting that will fill an entire gallery. Holst will also show a group of new works on paper.

A noted contemporary landscape artist and writer, Lin combines ancient Chinese ink techniques with video in creating engaging new animations. His show "Gu (Grains)" comprises two animations and a range of related works, including a script, collages and a drawing.

Meanwhile, in Gallery Three, the UWM Department of Visual Art opens its undergraduate exhibition, "Presence," through February 21. Work by graduating students in varied media and encompassing all disciplines taught in the Department of Visual Art will be shown.

The season kicks off with an opening on Fri., Feb. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. Britt Salvesen, curator of prints, drawings and photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum, will lead a public tour and discussion at 6:30.

Gallery One is located in Vogel Hall, 3253 N. Downer Ave., and is open Wednesday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m. The gallery will be closed during spring recess, March 21-28.

Gallery Three is on the second floor the Art Center Building, 2400 E. Kenwood Blvd. and is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon-5 p.m.

All inova exhibits are free and open to the public. For more information, call (414) 229-5070 or visit www.uwm.edu/PSOA/inova.
