Everyone has a story to tell, and Ben Krutzik wants to hear yours.
Krutzik, a 21-year-old UWM senior, organized a storytelling event called Fray Day that began eight years ago in San Francisco and is now celebrated in 12 cities across the country. This is the first time it will happen in Milwaukee.
"Fray Day is based on the idea that everyone has a story to tell. So the goal is for people from all walks of life to come together and share their stories," says Krutzik.
Milwaukee's Fray Day is Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Art Bar, 722 E. Burleigh St. Musical guest Beautiful Pollution will open the event, followed by featured storytellers at 8:30 p.m. and an open mic afterwards. The event is free.
"The one basic rule is that the stories must be true, and they must be personal," says Krutzik, who warns against "ranting or ax-grinding."
Adekola Adedapo, Kimberley Motley, Renato Umali, Bjorn Nasett and Jon Anne Willow are among the featured storytellers and each will speak for 10 minutes. Open mic-ers get five minutes to share their tales.
"Stories can really be about anything," says Krutzik. "Funny, serious, it doesn't matter. They just have to be true."
Fray Day's Web site is frayday.com.
