This weekend, The Social, located at 170 S. 1st St., closed its doors. After nearly five years in business and two Walker's Point locations, The Social served its last meal last week.

Due to a tightening economy and subsequent lacking sales, owner Kevin Sloan had been planning to close slowly throughout the last month.

The Social, originally located on South 2nd Street, moved to its current 1st Street location in 2005. Serving an upscale diner-style menu, The Social served as restaurant, bar, dance hall and show venue.

As creator of former restaurants Sol Fire and Room 434, Sloan's experience and contribution to Milwaukee's restaurant scene goes far beyond The Social. However, The Social, his longest running restaurant, has been a staple for Third Ward and Walker's Point residents for nearly a decade.

According to restaurant regulars, Sloan hopes to eventually redesign and reopen the restaurant.

Sloan was unavailable for comment.

I'm not surprised since the few times I've been there, the food has been consistently poor at that. I couldn't even rate it a half-star. I certainly will not miss the Social.

It's a shame that a "restaurateur" like Kevin Sloan wasn't able to sustain three restaurants and quality staff. Just wondering what he's doing now. Is he still in the state? -Heartbroken

I worked at the Social for quite awhile I saw it through it's ups and downs. I have to say that I was able to work with some of the best chefs and servers in the city at one point and I feel it will be sorely missed. My favorite aspect of The Social was how the owner was there almost all the time, which shows how much care he had for his establishment. I will echo many other postings when I say BRING BACK THE OLD SOCIAL...

I was a huge fan of the old social, I was there on the closing night and had one of the most memorable meals in my life. I have been to the new social several times with unpleasing meals after that I would just come in for cocktails. The servers and the cooks could not compare to the old social. I also loved Sol fire's food but that closed too.
