Note: The contents of this guide were checked for accuracy when this article was updated on Sept. 29, 2008 at 11:17 a.m. We continually update the thousands of articles on OnMilwaukee.com, but it's possible some details, specials and offers may have changed. As always, we recommend you call first if you have specific questions for the businesses mentioned in the guide.

When you're hungry for a satisfying yet quick lunch or dinner, or if you've got the munchies, nothing beats a good sub sandwich. Obviously you can always go to Subway or Cousin's. But there are many other fine places that offer excellent subs. Here's a sampling of some of the best.

Brooklyn Bob's
839 W. National Ave. (414) 389-9791
It has a variety of delicious subs to satisfy your apetite. When you need a break from chain sandwich shops, stop by Bob's and try a Coney Island with spicy Italian sausage. Sandwiches are served on Sciortino's rolls, so you can support two local businesses at the same time.

Erbert & Gerbert's
2238 N. Farwell Ave., (414) 262-2004

www.erbertandgerberts.com
An Eau Claire-based chain popular throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota has one location in Milwaukee. Erbert's has subs and club sandwiches and old standbys with a twist like The Pudder (JIF peanut butter and either Smucker's grape jelly or strawberry jam) and specialties like The Narmer, a turkey sub livened up with a bit of avocado.

Jimmy John's
3129 N. Oakland Ave., (414) 967-9014
1532 W. Wells St., (414) 344-1234
1344 E. Brady St., (414) 272-3333
11422 N. Port Washington Rd., (262) 241-0700
www.jimmyjohns.com
Jimmy John's subs are delicious, inexpensive and their menu is outstanding, offering something for everyone. The college kids can also be found here, making the most of the lightning fast service. They also deliver and are open late.

Gold Coast Subs
5901 W. Burnham St., (414) 541-4288
3883 S. 27th St., (414) 325-1877
The subs are large and filling. When you're done eating one there will be a salad in the bottom of the plastic bag that once held your sub. They really pack on the ingredients. The bread is also
scrumptious and among the finest anywhere.

PJ's
1749 N. Farwell Ave. (414) 271-7827
PJ's is another sub shop popular in the area. They also have a large menu with no shortage of choices. The employees are young and friendly and the subs plenty big. The yummy bread is also tough to beat . PJ's is a must for any sub sandwich lover. They deliver, too.

The Philly Way
405 S. 2nd St., (414) 273-2355
Not strictly a sub shop, The Philly Way, in Walker's Point, is nevertheless a great sandwich option and with pretty late opening hours. In the open kitchen you can watch as they cook up Philly Cheese Steaks -- made from prime Rib-Eye -- Philly Dogs, 100 percent white breast meat Chicken Philly Cheese Steaks, Philly Style Spaghetti (with peppers, onions and/or mushrooms), Philly Chili (with shredded sirloin) and Philly Fries (long, fries with the skin on -- with or without Cheese Whiz!). They also make a half-pound Black Angus burger they unabashedly call, "The City's BEST Burger."

Pizza Shuttle
1827 N. Farwell Ave., (414-289-9500)
www.pizzashuttle.com
Pizza Shuttle has a massive menu that includes sub sandwiches. The subs are big, reasonably priced and loaded with extras. And if you want to people watch while you eat, you can't beat Pizza Shuttle (especially late on the weekends). They are open very late every night of the week and they deliver, as well.

Potbelly Sandwich Works
135 W. Wisconsin Ave., (414) 226-0014
17800 W. Bluemound Rd., (262) 796-9845
5725 N. Bayshore Dr., (414) 963-9032
12455 W. Capitol Dr., (262) 781-3150

http://www.potbellys.com/
Potbelly's serves up toasted sandwiches made your way. Wash it down with a fresh smoothie or gourmet bottled soda. Don't forget to keep an eye on the perch on the east side of the restaurant; it sometimes hosts live music.

Quizno's
700 W. Wisconsin Ave., (414) 278-7500
233 E. Wisconsin Ave., (414) 431-333
7524 W. Greenfield Ave., (414) 256-QUIZ
4650 South Howell Ave., (414) 483-2361
3116 N. Downer Ave, (414) 967-7090

Check out the recently added soups in a toasted bread bowl.

Fan said: Goldcoast Subs opened another shop in the old subway by Target on Chase avenue (same tiny parking lot as RSE video) and they have gotten my business since they opened. I talked to the owner today (who just happened to be in there) and told him he has great subs. He said, "please, tell your friends!" The subs have a distinct taste and I keep coming back for more. Excellent and LOCAL sub shop. Help support him, go try a sub today! B
