October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
As of yesterday, smoking is gone completely from Water Buffalo, the Joe and Angie Sorge restaurant and bar at 249 N. Water St. in the Historic Third Ward. Smoking was allowed downstairs, but now the entire space is smoke free.
"When we reopened Swig in its new location on Broadway we went totally smoke free. Honestly, it's ultimately what led to the decision to create a smoke free environment at Water Buffalo. It's just such a different experience to walk into a restaurant and enjoy the aroma of its food rather than the smoke from the bar,"says Joe Sorge.
As for a city or statewide ban in bars and restaurants, Sorge says he supports one, adding, "I think statewide is the only way to be totally fair to all establishments."
Water Buffalo also is adding new menu items like a curry turkey sandwich, a Sausage Meatball Hero, an Italian eggplant entrée and a new swordfish dish.
Sorge also tells me that he's forged a new collaborative effort between Swig and Thief Wine in the Milwaukee Public Market.
Said Sorge, "Co-owner, Phil Bilodeau is serving as our host for our monthly events at Swig and we're trying to make all wines from each event available at both the restaurant and the shop."

Thank you Water Buffalo for making a very good MKE restaurant even better. There are a lot of bars/restaurants that have gone completely smoke free here or smoke free until 10:00pm in the last year, hopefully that trend continues!

zboy-every good Communist nation comes up with great reasons why they should make decisions for you-thats what is supposed to make America great-that we can make our own decisions based on our own judgement . So go to places like water buffalo if you dont smoke and you wont have to hang out with people who dont share your mindset

So then why not support banning smoking altogether? If it's sooo deadly for those who inhale second-hand smoke, then it must be even worse for those who smoke all the time. Before banning smoking in privately-owned businesses, why aren't people clamoring for a ban in homes where children are present?

Here are results from just two of scores of studies a person could cite (one from the National Cancer Institute, the other from the University of California-San Francisco): 35,000 to 62,000 deaths each year are attributed to secondhand smoke. Restaurant environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS, is three to five times higher than in a typical workplace. Servers have a 50% to 90% increased risk of lung cancer; an average employee's ETS exposure is eight to 20 times higher than domestic exposure in a home where someone smokes. The air in an average restaurant contains six times the carbon monoxide one would inhale standing on a busy California highway. *** Even without studies such as these, it's hard to imagine Parts-per million levels of contaminants being greater on average in open air that in confined spaces. Hang out for a spell in a Friday night 'Fish Fry Bar' without a smoking ban, and then walk outside. Yes, the air is polluted; but not at the levels achieved inside 'four walls'.

mkelover: I can see that if you go by the link you provided where you'd think that outdoor air is worse for you than second-hand smoke. But I guess it depends on whose studies you decide to go by. I just did a Google search (which I did earlier to check on jpepin5150's claims), and I found more studies that show second-hand smoke is worse than outdoor air. Here, check out this study: Employees in Arkansas hospitality venues allowing indoor smoking are exposed to levels of particulate matter in excess of levels recommended for outdoor air by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect public health. Based on the average PM2.5 level observed in all venues in this study where smoking was allowed (239 g/m3), full-time bar and restaurant employees are exposed to almost four times the annual EPA exposuree limit of fine particulate air pollution, solely from occupational exposure." And also ask yourself this: Why are people who are exposed to second-hand smoke showing far GREATER negative health issues than those who aren't exposed to second-hand smoke? The studies on second-hand smoke are pretty conclusive these days. But thanks for offering an alternative viewpoint.
