October is the third annual Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delicious features, chef profiles, unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2009."

Roots Restaurant & Cellar
1818 N. Hubbard St., (414) 374-8480
www.rootsmilwaukee.com

Roots makes all of its food from scratch and with seasonal ingredients. The owners are passionate supporters of sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, so all of the meats are naturally raised and the fish is sashimi grade, wild caught, flown in whole and filleted on site. Plus, most of the vegetables are locally grown.

Roots has a full bar featuring a good wine selection, and upon request will modify dishes to accommodate vegetarians. A couple of vegetarian dishes, including the praised tempura tofu, ($18), are on the menu.

Menu: Upscale American.

Price: Moderate.

When to go: Roots is no longer open for lunch, so evening is the time to go. Sunday brunch is served, too.

Dress: Casual is acceptable, but feel free to spruce up for a Roots experience. The well-dressed will feel comfortable here, too.

Don't miss: The amazing view of Downtown. Take a moment to gaze, even if your table is not near the massive windows.

Parking: Street parking is the only option, but it's not usually a problem because Roots is located in a quiet neighborhood.

Roots used to be pretty amazing, but now seems much more hit or miss in terms of the quality of the preparation and most notably, the service. They seem to have a high degree of turnover outside of a few core staff members. I've taken to actually asking for specific servers, even if it means a sub par view. Some people do the same for menu options, but I find that having a wonderful, talented, professional server is just about as important as what's on the plate when you are considering the entire dining experience.

"Milwaukee is still lacking a good brunch place." I suggest Trocadero.

While the view from the front of the restaurant is nice, the ambiance towards the back is a different story. Electrical cords wound through a wall decoration, drop tile ceiling that has seen better days and a clear view into the storage area makes you fell like Roots is not quite sure what they want to be; upscale or country diner. I've only done brunch here and it was okay. Milwaukee is still lacking a good brunch place. We need First Watch to come here!

I think Roots is reasonably priced considering the quality of ingredients. Brunch is around 35-40 for two entrees, 2 bloody marys, 2 beers and 2 coffees. Drink less or not at all and you can have a fantastic entree for around 8-10 dollars. This is the best brunch in town, the food is delicious and beautiful.

Sadly, Roots is a little too pricey for it to be a regular (or even semi-regular) haunt. The last time I went was for brunch and they had a steak and eggs with pork belly special. Far and away the best breakfast I've ever had the pleasure of eating.
