You don't have to drive to the near South Side to find delicious Mexican food in a cool atmosphere. With two locations, Habanero's Mexican Kitchen offers a cool environment, quick service, tasty food and an impressive selection of tequilas. You'll find the usual combo plates here, all well done with excellent beans and rice, but more adventurous diners can sample authentic Mexican dishes. Shrimp and pork selections are standouts.
Menu: Mexican.
Price: Inexpensive to moderate.
When to go: Happy hour is always fun at Habanero's, where the bar runs frequent specials on margaritas and Mexican beers. Monday is especially cool, because martinis are $6.
Dress: Just about any dress code is acceptable, from casual to business attire.
Don't miss: The guacamole en molcajet, prepared table-side, is as good as any you'll find in town. They've usually got five different choices, from traditional to roasted of favorito (with chorizo).
Parking: Plenty available.

I have only eaten there once. I had a chicken taco plate. The chicken was so tough...I will never eat there again.

I've gotta go with Mr. John on this one - I stop at Habanero's at least every other week, and their food is always spot on. Great flavors, and presentation. The monthly specials just add to an already impressive menu. Can't beat the fresh guac, and free happy hour food.

aardvark - tell us more. What makes it so terrible? What did you eat, a chimichanga? The fried ice cream? What was so bad?

This place is terrible. One step up from Chi-Chi's.

Don't be fooled by the Strip Mall Location. Adventurous menu. Nice bar. Great service. I'll take this place over La Fuente and La Perla any day. My favorite north side mexican dig. Jalapeno Loco is my fave on the south side.
