There might not be anything better than $2 tacos on a Sunday night. |

October is the third annual Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, delicious features, chef profiles, unique articles on everything food, as well as the winners of our "Best of Dining 2009."
Charro
729 E. Milwaukee St., (414) 431-5557
charrorestaurante.com
Milwaukee Street welcomed Charro in December 2008 as the latest venture of veteran trio Tom Wackman (Apartment 720, Kenadees, Carnevor and Umami Moto Milwaukee), Omar Shaikh (Carnevor and Umami Moto Milwaukee) and Michael Polaski (Umami Moto in Brookfield and Milwaukee and Mi-Key's on Jefferson Street). The restaurant combines reasonably priced and well-delivered Latin cuisine with bold, striking décor.
Menu: A compilation of Cuban, Mexican and Spanish flavors.
Price: Moderate.
When to go: Night time is the right time. Charro isn't open for lunch, so don't show up before 5 p.m.
Dress: You probably wouldn't want to wear your sweats here (or anywhere along Milwaukee Street), but other than that, jeans and other casual-to-nice attire is acceptable.
Don't miss: The $2 tacos on Sunday nights and $1 margaritas on Thursday nights.
Parking: Again, this is a Milwaukee Street restaurant and, like many Downtown eateries, street parking is first come, first served.

Good talkbacks. They're at least honest. On my visit service was questionable. Food arrived at different times and drinks sat empty for quite some time. The food was frankly, unimaginative. I had a 'paella' which amounted to little more than a couple shrimp scallop and rice. No crunch from the pan, and no kick of flavor. Most of the other dishes were variously prepared bbq pork. Pretty disappointing and really expensive. Atmosphere is loud and stuffy and the decor, well let's leave it at ostentatious. With Milwaukee's great dining scene places ought to hold themselves to a higher standard.

I love the atmosphere/decor/vibe and service was great, but the food is just OK, better with the basics, tacos, enchiladas, worse with the more imaginitive entrees. Margaritas are not great and very pricy ($12). I'd prefer to go there for the bar and munchies.

I really, really want to like this place--and as far as "Latin" cuisine goes, I suppose it is more than passable--but that said, it still feels like slightly sexed up Mexican food in a beautiful setting. Most Mexican food and most Indian food is nothing more than poor quality ingredients spiced to the nines to hopefully make people forget that they are eating the worst parts of chickens or something no more exciting than beans or rice. People who "love" Mexican food really don't like food. The same could be said of Charro.

This is a great restaurant. There Ceviche and Empanada's are the best. The restaurant has a sexyness to it! Great place for a date night with the man! There Mojito's are a great addition to the meal also!
