Does anyone know what's going on with Pepe's Rockin' taco Shack, the brightly colored Mexican restaurant at 2014 N. Farwell Ave.?
Although it's supposedly open at 4 p.m. on Mondays and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, it hasn't been open at all this week. The restaurant is dark, the Web site is down and the phone line just rings and rings.
Brothers Oscar and Ozzy Ibarra, owners of CO2 Ultra Lounge, opened Pepe's in 2007 (and it was originally to be called Pepe's Pink Taco) a spot known for Mexican fare. It formerly housed Sol Fire restaurant, and before that, La Casita.
I've never eaten there, but I've heard mixed reviews. If it's gone, I wonder what's next for the space? More Mexican?

It is definitely gone. I live right near there (I emailed you guys!) telling you it is indeed closed. A few weeks ago it was dark and there was a We Energies disconnection note on their door. Stacks of the Shepherd sitting unread. And I recently saw the owner loading his Hummer up with booze from their bar. They've been tapering back their hours for months. I never ate there due to personal problems I had with them. I say good riddance! That spot is terribly hard to fill - odd location and huge space. I can't imagine who will go in now.

The food was not good, and the service even worse. Let's hope something decent goes in the place.

The building isn't cursed, it has just had one bad concept after another. La Casita had terrible food, Sol Fire was a step above dog food, Pepe's returned to the terrible theme but this time extended it to include the atmosphere as well.

I commented on that place in a talkback a couple months ago, that building has been cursed since the 80's.
