On my last visit to the Downer Avenue Original Pancake House, I noticed a flyer promoting curbside breakfast sandwich delivery. How cool, I thought. So, this morning on my drive in to our beautiful East Side office I passed up my usual Alterra stop, called OPH, ordered a sandwich and drove to 2621 N. Downer Ave.
While some may have the impression that Downer is dying (recent restaurant closings have caused this perception), I think it's on its way back. OPH, the remodeled CVS (sure it's a drug store, but it's very nice) and the wonderful Café Hollander have all helped. Future projects will make it the destination neighborhood it should be. But anyway, back to my sandwich.
I drove up, called again, Josh came out and for $5 ($4.72 plus tax) I got an egg and jack cheese sandwich (bacon and/or sausage is available, but it's Friday during Lent so I passed) and a large coffee. It was quick, the service was friendly and the sandwich much better than what you'd get from a fast food drive through. And really, how bad can a muffin, egg and cheese be for you?
So, the next time you need a little something different during your morning drive call (414) 431-5055 and get hooked up with a tasty breakfast sandwich from Original Pancake House (for the record, the coffee's okay but could be better -- oh well).
