The party appears over for the Holiday House, the classic-meets-contemporary restaurant that opened in September 2005 at 525 E. Menomonee St.
Owner Joe Volpe closed his doors on Sunday, Aug. 5.
Holiday House earned several favorable reviews after opening two years ago in the Third Ward.
Volpe launched his lounge, V Bar, 703 S. 2nd St., in April 2007. That venue, he says, will stay open and has no plans of closing.
Volpe's grandfather ran the original Milwaukee Holiday House, which was located on the corner of Clybourn and Van Buren Streets from the 1940s through the '60s.

Shame on you Milwaukee! Do you have nothing better to do than belittle a man who's dreams and ambitions have been put on hold?!? It's sad to know that the community that I grew up in is so petty and eager to kick someone when they're down. Whether I'm a fan of JV or not, no one EVER wants to see someone have to give up their dream. So say there is more to the story.....who cares? It shouldn't matter! I bet you'd feel real bad if JV had some sort of terminal illness, and while he's trying to fight for his life and close the door on his dreams, he's reading all these mean and hurtful things. Again, shame on you...........

Wow! and I thought that this guy was supposed to be one of our best. Maybe we start to think differently about what makes a chef great.

Loved Holiday House and was sad to see it go for whatever the reason. Is Joe Volpe still a partner at Tess or is VBar his only project still kicking... anyone know? As for Rey Sol, Getto reported back in April that he had talked to one of the family members who said the new Rey Sol would be near the Social on 1st St. near Pittsburg and that they were planning to open this summer.

Regardless of the internal squabbles or who cooked on what night, the bottom line is that people didn't go there enough to keep them financially healthy. Milwaukee has a VERY crowded dining scene and if you don't stick out in some way, you'll soon fall by the wayside. And no, advertising in Info* will not translate into people busting down your door to get in. Heck, I lived in the building where HH was located and I only ate there once in 2 years of living there! What does that tell you? They were never top of mind like other places were even though I had heard good things and knew the GM from high school. Good chefs may know how to open a restaurant and run a great kitchen cranking out spectacular food, but restauranteurs may be well-advised to learn advertising 101 a little better.

Ann-P- I truly doubt you have more "inside info" than I or any "inside info" at all...but you know what? it really doesn't matter! I'm glad you feel sorry for me...you should! I was duped by Volpe's lies and charms also, but then I woke up! I was one of his staunchest defenders and would stick my neck out for him just like you are doing now...but then light was shone on the truth, as always, and the facts came out... I don't feel sorry for you...I don't feel anything for you...you know what P.T. Barnum said............
