After chasing Heinemann's around town, the local restaurant chain has bailed on us. Back to square one for breakfast, I guess.
When we lived on the East Side and worked Downtown, we frequented the Whitefish Bay and Downtown (US Bank Building, Milwaukee and State) Heinemann's locations. Before that, when I was working Downtown in the '80s, I'd stop at the original place on Milwaukee Street.
When we moved west, we dined often at the Mayfair Road location. When that closed, we relocated to 76th and Bluemound, which has lately become a regular breakfast spot for us.
Today, Heinemann's -- founded Downtown in 1923 -- announced it's shutting all its locations, leaving us not only without grilled coffee cake, but also without oatmeal pancakes and turkey sausage.
Last week, we tried Bluemound Gardens for the first time and maybe that will become our spot -- there's always Ted's, which we like, too, but it's hard with a toddler on busy weekend mornings.
It's just too soon to tell.
And without my bottomless cup of coffee, I'm in no state to make that kind of decision.

I used to work across the street from Heinemann's and they had amazing fruit and yogurt parfaits with honey for breakfast, and their veggie burgers were some of the best I've ever had. I never expected a place like that to be s The sauce that came with them was amazing. I hope those recipies are out there somewhere. They had wonderful baked goods, too. A rare mix of good comforting food and a great variety. I haven't been there since we moved away, but they will be missed, regardless!!

Serious breakfast place downtown: Mykonos Gyro & Cafe at 1014 N. Van Buren Street. I've found that Baker's Square also has decent classic breakfast foods for cheap.

I was a huge fan of Heinemann's, I grew up going quite often; both the one in WFB and in Bayside. I will say though that it was bit irritating to see the owner on the news blame the sick day ordinance just as it was to see the amount of rent blamed when the WFB location closed. Heinemanns had great food... but... they did not keep up with changing times. For example, I was there last week and we noticed there was more people eating alone than anything else - they needed a lunch counter. Also, they never got espresso machines, which was annoying. Plus, the only thing that changed on their menu were the prices. A smootie at Heinemans was $3.97. Ridiculous. Still though I will miss it, they seriously had the best veggie burgers ever.

Hey captain, why not let the marketplace decide whether places should require sick days? If employees don't like the sick day policy of a place DONT WORK THERE. Should employees be able to be home sick and not get fired, of course. Should the employer be forced to pay them for these days? No. Sick days are a privilege, not a right.

I worked there when I was a teen - great place to work, fun times, relaxing place to eat. My girlfriend & I even enjoyed a bottle of red wine one time we ate there. However, unfortunately the food wasn't so good for the money the last few times we visited. Even the grilled coffee cake became smaller in size. I can see why it's closing. Another reason to look forward to the opening of the new Cafe' Hollander in Tosa.
