Celebrate "Fred Usinger Day" with free bratwurst

Feeling a little hungry today but not in the mood to open the wallet?

No problem, thanks to Old German Beer Hall, which is celebrating "Fred Usinger Day" by providing customers with a free Usinger's brat today.

Both the city and county have issued proclamations dedicating the day to Usinger, who founded his well-known sausage company 130 years ago and remains a fixture on Old World 3rd Street -- across the street from the Old German Beer Hall -- to this day.

The free bratwurst giveaway honors the legendary sausage-maker by with an homage to a longtime Milwaukee tradition. Bars, in Usinger's early days, often provided customers with free lunches and bar owners were willing to purchase Usinger's sausages because of their popularity with customers.

Customers can get their free bratwurst by visiting the Old German Beer Hall, 1009 N. Old World 3rd St., between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Eating at Mitchell

There was a time, not all that long ago, when a hungry traveler at Mitchell International Airport could choose from Burger King, a spinning hot dog and Famous Amos cookies. And that was about it. But, kids, this ain`t your daddy`s Mitchell Field anymore.

Usinger's Sausage

It doesn`t even need to be said that Usinger`s is a Milwaukee tradition, does it? I didn`t even grow up here and I have fond memories of visiting the store at 1030 N. Old World 3rd St., as a child with my grandparents. I love that nearly 40 years later, it still smells and looks exactly the same as I remember it from my youth.

NBA lockout

The NBA was to have opened its 2011-12 season this week, but the ongoing lockout wiped those games -�in fact, all November games -�from the schedule. League commissioner David Stern has ruled out a full, 82-game season and even an abbreviated campaign seems unlikely as the two sides remain stuck. For those who own bars and restaurants near the Bradley Center, the loss of games means a lot of lost revenue.
